Best Airport To Layover @ & Spot

Thu Aug 28, 2003 9:13 pm

hey ppl,

I apologize first hand if this topic has been posted before...but out of the airports you have lay'd over at...in ur opinion which is your favorite to spot planes?

L/O in:

Out of those...I have 2 fav's...
1) HNL - even though mainly just US and Asian airlines...love HNL for its "open airport" design and listening to all the active planes move about, take off/land, etc...

2) LAX - such a variety of airplanes AND airlines. Still love watching/looking at my B777's and B744's!

My favorites:
LHR: Pretty wide variety of aircraft types and airlines.
JFK: Same, US style...
ORD: Lots of UA heavies and other foreign carriers.
MIA: Nice light, and plenty of Latin American and European carriers and heavies.
HKG: My favorite place for Asian companies.
FRA: Lots of East European companies and many different kinds of aircrafts

DTW's new midfield terminal is great for spotting with those huge windows. Especially if you go to Concourse B and the planes are taking off on 4R, you get nice and close to the planes taxing by and taking off. If you have time you can go out to the parking garage and see the planes take off on 3L too, they are quite close. But then again it will be 90% red tails

I liked having a layover in ATL, it was so busy it was pretty cool but it was pretty much all Delta, although it was cool because you saw Delta and ASA planes in the 3 diff color schemes

I would concur with the AMS/Schiphol choice. They are one of the few airports left with outdoor observation decks. Have not passed thru recently, so I don't know current policy on any sort of photography.

Was stationed at Rhein Main AB/FRA back in the late 70's/early 80's, some fantastic spotting there as well...
