Best Spanish Airline...........not Iberia

Fri Aug 29, 2003 9:36 am

Iberia are a terrible flag carrier for Spain, my vote goes to Spanair. They should definately get out of the charter market and focus more on scheduled.

I found UX good when I flew them routing LGW-MAD-AGP last year.

Yeah Air Europa flew me from EDI-TFS in January on one of the 737-800s with winglets. They had an inflight entertainment system which they didnt use at all during the flight of hours so my points go to Spanair.

Ahhh I flew on one of its 738s (non-winglets!  Sad ) on the MD), Spain">MAD-AGP leg. Yeah, it was fine.

I flew on JKK when I was much younger (MD-83) so I can't remember much about it.

ACEregular: yep...SpanAir is a great airline. Flew them IAD-MAD-BCN and then MAD-IAD in July 2001. Excellent service, clean plane, etc. etc. To top it off, the landing in MAD was PERFECT....best I've experienced ever.

Not sure if they fly into IAD anymore or are matched with UA/Star Alliance. Didn't see any sign of them at IAD last week, and there was no mention in the United Hemispheres in-flight magazine. Anyone know what happened?

Never flew on Iberia, can't say anything good or bad about them.
And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

In my previous position I had many contacts with Spanair, and I've always enjoyed working with them. Having HQ in PMI is certainly a bonus (even though they are basically just containers...). I had some nice flights (domestic, Europe) with them too, above all with their (or AeBal's) 717. Thus I'm happy that they are in Star Alliance now!
But to be fair, my IB flights (within Europe) were OK too.

I both flew on Iberia and Spanair, and my vote goes to none. I just have to say there is no BEST Spanish Airline. Sorry

I have flown both on Iberia (numerous times) and recently on Spanair (just twice).
I find Iberia OK, but I was quite impressed by the Spanair A320 two weeks ago on a flight from MUC to VLC. Good service, brand new plane, and even flight information on the screens : surprising to me for a rather short flight...
Two weeks earlier though, I flew on a Spanair MD82 on VLC-MUC, but then I was a bit less impressed : the space between seats was very limited, with my length (1m88) I had a difficult time; ik looked like e real charter flight....
So, my preference : Spanair, but only if the flight is with an A 320 or 321...

I´ve never flown on Spanair or Air Europa, but I´d love to.
I´ve always flown on Iberia and I know they don´t have the best inflight service, but it is Ok for me...I´ve had many bad experiences with KLM and there it is, among the best in europe.
Iberia has a very modern and large fleet (4th largest in europe), 76 years of experience, a wide variety of destinations, almost 30 million pax carried last year and an excellent safety record.
All those are very important facts to have in mind when choosing an airline.

And for DoorstoManual: why do you always look for the smallest chance to criticize Iberia as if it was the worst thing in the planet?

Although IB does not directly operate the CR1s and DH8s, etc, is the service aboard these aircraft better than that aboard the mainline IB flights?

I flew on a 738 last night, got extra leg room, and got to visit the flight deck.

Excellent Airline.

The only time I went with AirNostrum I found service in General to be better than in mainline.

It used to be better with Air Nostrum before Iberia sort of took over them. Now, it's all the same...

I think you exaggerate. I have flown them before (more than once), and I am sorry if you don't like my opinion, but it remains: their service is very average on all of the intercontinental flights I have taken with them. And this is a 'Oneworld' carrier we are talking about, so I think it is a serious issue made more serious by the fact that IB is now getting a reputation for below-par service in the international field.

Other than that, I have absolutely no problems with Iberia. I will continue to fly them, if they continue to offer their cheap deals on int'l flights. It's just sad to see that the service never changes.

Honestly, guys, I don't know what do you expect of an airlane... 5* hotel service? C'mon, it is an airplane, personal entertainment systems are relatively new toys and what's important is to get to your destination. It has good service on board and hot meals. Is not this more important than a few PTVs? I'm afraid that many of the posters complaining about I-don't-know-why are teens that expect nothing less than a personalized integrated 3D game boy on board. Isn't it a little bit too much?

I fully subscribe IBERIA747's arguments on Iberia.

About Spanair, just fine. Accepting maybe that the older M80s are coming from the charter ages. Today it is a fully regular airline flying to every spanish airports several times a day achieving 95% punctuality or giving a full ticket for free.

Air Europa is maybe the only complaint now, as they have been announcing fare reduction eliminating meals on board, and finally the meals have been eliminated and the fares keep as they were.

Also, why do you mean that the service is "so average"????

If it is "average" it is not bad... I have flown a few dozens flights on Iberia, Air Europa, Spanair and, out of Spain, Olympic. Olympic has some kind of "homeland warmth" although I'm not greek, and for the rest... Well, there must be some reason why Iberia cut offer only 5% while BA cut 20%, for example, and why having invested in such large orders (95 A32X family, and 15 340) it is, as of today, the only european "regular" airline having profits. I would not want to make a mistake, but in the range of 275M €

DoorsToManual,

You indeed seem to have a bad eye on Iberia, is it maybe due to the result on the business temptative on AR? Those bad results were fruit of the excessive corruption in high Aerolineas spheres and the wild strikes in opposition to whom was trying to save the company. I don't know why Argentinians took so bad that airlanes were flying as Aerolineas in Iberia colors... actually, they were flying FOR Aerolineas at IBERIA's expenses, causing, by then, an important outgoing cash flow from here... I wonder how someone else dared to buy Aerolineas after that, but in any way, some thousands of firings and advanced retirements have been executed, exactly the same Iberia wanted (needed) to do for viability of a company with exagerated oversatff. Take it easy.

Happy turbulences!!!

Turbulence, you must be confusing me with some other member. I have no interest in the whole AR/Iberia story, quite apart from the fact that I am not clear on the details.

I have always argued that foreign investement should be welcomed, so long as it is appropriate and benefits the public, not just the companies involved.

As for my being anti-Iberia - I think some of you are overreacting to what equates to mild criticism of ONE aspect of the airline's operation. I am anti-Iberia service. I don't like the fact that on a long flight, crew throw meal trays at me, ignore or forget requests for water, and feel insulted if you walk up to the galley and ask them for anything. Maybe they should get rid of their older crew, they are by far the rudest.

As I wrote in my previous reply above, the rest doesn't bother me in the slightest. I don't care about PTVs, seat pitches or amenity packs.

Their fares are pretty good most of the time, they are reliable and all of my flights have departed and arrived in good time. So: I'll continue to use them.

N.B. that I was not the one who started the ball rolling with respect to negative opinions of Iberia...I believe someone else started this thread  Big grin
