Zoom 767 Flying Too Much?

Sat Aug 30, 2003 4:19 am

Zoom Airlines has (as far as i know) only one 767 that they fly frequently between Canada and the UK, so frequently in fact that Im wondering when exactly they do any maintenance. The aircraft is flown into YEG, where I work, several times a week, going between here and LGW, it also flies several flights per week into YVR,YYC, and YYZ also going to to the UK. I was wondering how they do maintenance on this aircraft when it is always in the air, and is it safe for the aircraft to be constantly flying almost 24/7?

it is not uncommon for a new-ish long range aircraft to be scheduled for up to 13 round trips to Europe in a 2 week (ie, 14 day) period in high season, with scheduled mx on the rare sked down day & heavier mx scheduled for the slower shoulder seasons such as the fall & spring.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

My only guess is that the services they offer are multi stop, ie visiting several Canadian cities and then stopping off in several places in the UK, since it seems nearly impossible to get so much util out of this a/c otherwise.

Anyone else know more?

The aircraft only needs a few hours down-time built into the schedule during to course of a normal week for maintenance.

A B767 will normally have a 2A check taking around 15 hours every 2-3 months, and a 1C check taking around 9 days every 6-8 months depending on your level of usage.

If the aircraft was not being maintained in accordance with its maintenance schedule it wouldn't be flying!

Actually, this is normal for charter airlines. Come the fall, it will have more down time.

As an example, take a look at one of Air Transat's A310s for this winter. This particular a/c is based in Atlantic Canada and flies out of Moncton (YQM), Halifax (YHZ) and St. John's (YYT). It doesn't stop much!

Matt,
That schedule is quite generous by European charter standards - 2-4 hours down time every morning before the first rotation of the day and a 10 hour down time on Tuesday night  Smile

How is Zoom doing and is it alright to opperate a business with only one aircraft. What happens if an engine fails, they could be way behind? Would and could they use another airline to carry out their traveling until theirs is ready? Is there hopes for another aircraft in the future for Zoom? What is the market like, and what about the loads on the aircraft?

Thanks for the info and is there any employees on this site...if you are not a member email me i would like to know?

C3 had just 1 752 for almost their entire first year. The odd significant mx delay would throw flights off for several days until they got caught up.

In the Summer, some of our 757s average 17 hours daily utilisation. Like Crosswind said, one night a week they will get a long rest for the heavier MX checks to be conducted.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

Zoom is planning on getting a second 763 next spring. For this coming winter, if they ever had a mech problem, then 7F will gladly step in with our 722. ZM will have time to do a C check in late October, just before the winter season starts in early November. Zoom will be flying the 763 this winter from YOW and YHZ. No YHM this year.
