BA LCY Changes

BA is making some changes to its recently started London City operations.

Glasgow is dropped
Edinburgh is starting 4/weekday
Geneva is starting 3/weekday

Looks like the long-standing codeshare from BE/CB on LCY-EDI is in for some unwanted competition. Heard about them dropping GLA and adding EDI a few weeks ago and I'm still puzzled by it. You'd think BA operating to GLA without a competitor would produce more passengers than flying to EDI where there is an already established service.

Call me suspicious, but are BA trying to muscle BE out of LCY so that they can claim it as 'their own'? After all, if BE/CB are unable to make their EDI service work with BA compeating, will it be cost effective for FlyBe to stick around at LCY for the remaining JER and IOM/BHD services??

This is bad news for CB as this is their main route. On the other hand they have some muscle behind them in the form of Mr Souter and so may stay. I think BE will stay as they have a tendency to spread themselves out!

I wonder whether, should CB withdraw from the LCY-EDI-LCY route, BACX will then restart its LCY-GLA-LCY service. Hmm. BACX could just be repositioning its fleet to direct compete with CB with the direct intention of CB ceasing its operation on this route.

ScotAirways announced in Travel Weekly that it had no intention to alter its LCY-EDI schedule in light of BA's announcement. They claim there is enough traffic on the route to support two carriers.

To be honest, I find it a nice change that airlines like FlyBe are getting a bit of their own back. BA & BACitiExpress (BACX) has been forced to withdraw or downsize from so many UK domestic routes recently, it is nice to see we are agressively competing in the marketplace.

I hope BACX do become the dominant carrier at London City, I think the market, being primarily business oriented suits our product and positioning a lot better than other regional routes.
