Westjet/JetBlue Alliance?

Sat Aug 30, 2003 10:05 am

Westjet has said that it will be flying to the States within a year. JetBlue has been rumoured to be flying to Canada soon.

There is some history between Westjet and JetBlue in that David Neeleman (if I'm not mistaken) was part of Westjet in their earlier years. JetBlue installed DirectTV on its aircraft, and Westjet has followed suit and will be doing the same starting in the fourth quarter of 2003.

Having said that, I'm going to speculate a little bit..

JetBlue starts flights to Westjets hub in YYC. JetBlue offers connecting flights within Canada on Westjet aircraft. Westjet starts flights to JetBlue's hub in LGB. Westjet offers connecting flights within the States on JetBlue aircraft. You see what I'm getting at? You could also add in flights to Westjets eastern hub in YHM and JetBlue's eastern hub at JFK.

Both of these airlines offer similar customer service and (soon) inflight entertainment. Would if be financially feesible for an "alliance" to form? There is no such LCC alliance in the world, so this would be a first.

What are your thoughts and comments?
EH.

It does seem logical given the Neeleman similarities, but jetBlue said as soon as operations started that alliances were really out of the question. Doesnt mean it cant happen, but I highly doubt it.

Southwest might be a possibility for alliance with WestJet as well... fleet similarities and so on aside, Southwest has had a good relationship with WestJet from the start. Staff from WestJet often visit Southwest's offices in a sort of "exchange" program, to see how they do things. There's a number of WestJet departments which are exact copies of the Southwest model. Southwest even "loaned" one of its 737-700s to WestJet for a brief period (it wasn't put into WS' route service, it simply was a test-drive sort of thing) so WS could evaluate the -700 for its own purposes.

The common fleet type would also help WS' in terms of maintenance in bases in the US. Currently, WestJet sends one of its own maintenance guys down on its charters to LAS and so on.... that's simply not practical on scheduled service.

As it stands, WS and Southwest have fairly extensive domestic networks in their respective countries - WS has no where near the number of aircraft that Southwest does, but they're increasing their fleet numbers all the time. I could see the possibility of a sweeping code-share andor transborder operation between the two in the future....

.... such a move would certainly be a "check-mate" sort of move towards carriers such as AC and UA, which have a large chunk - some would say, stranglehold - of the US-Canada transborder market.
