SFO-Asia, Best Carrier

Sat Aug 30, 2003 11:24 am

a couple of friends and i are looking into going to asia for a couple of weeks in 2004. what would be the best airline to fly there. if emirates starts services, that would probably be our first choice, but what would be the best airline to go there on, we are probably going either SFO-HKG, SFO-ICN, or SFO-NRT gateways there, what would be the best choice for airline and gateway?

copaair737: Welcome to the Airliners.net forums!

From what I've heard, I would say Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific. However, United Airlines is quite good, and that is from personal experience (not to Asia thought). I've also heard that Asiana is good. I would avoid China Airlines and Korean Airlines for safety reasons.

i was at the korean crash in guam... it was gruesome. i still wouldnt let one incident deter myself of flying with them, look at united and american, they had a couple of their planes get hijacked and slammed into the WTC, but people dont stop flying them because of that.

Korean Air has cleaned up their act quite a bit. I flew then in 2001 DFW-ICN-PEK. They are a good airline to fly with, although their 744's don't have PTV's. Their service is excellent. However, I'd pick Singapore Airlines over everything else.

Choose Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific if you are flying SFO-HKG! Both beat UA easily.

Hong Kong is a nice city, certainly much more interesting the bland Singapore. Japan is good, but expensive.

Malaysia Airlines offers great deals to Asia albeit you would need to catch the flight at LAX.

Give them a try if you do not mind the extra connection at LAX. They are afterall the winner of the World's Best Inflight Cabin Staff for 3 consecutive years.  Big grin

Their B744s have PTVs in Economy and generous pitch along with the great service.

I am going on an Asian vacation in April/May. I am booked on an SQ 744 from SFO-SIN on the way over. On the trip back, I am flying a Korean Air 773 from Beijing-Seoul and an SQ 772 from Seoul-SFO. There was no way that I was going to Asia and not trying SQ, which I have heard is incredible. I am flying First Class(since my dad is paying!), and SQ FC is supposed to be amazing! I was a little leary of Korean Air, but we have a great travel agent and she said that she knows they have excellent service - that it has greatly improved over the last few years. Try ANA or JAL. Heard numerous wonderful stuff about them, and I'm sure they will not dissapoint you.

Talking about Korean Air, they have improved a lot indeed. However, I'd rather take Asiana over Korean Air, since Asiana, not only an airline that has excellent service, but their safety record is top-notch most airlines in thr world.

If you're flying SFO - HKG, it's always CX or SQ. Prices for CX are always slightly lower than SQ on this sector but the service is rather the same. PTVs, nice crew, departure and arrival times are also around the same.

Best Regards

You won't have First Class on the ICN-SFO leg because the aircraft used on the leg is only 2 class.

Surprised SQ guy hasn't come around yet  Big grin

i flew ual from san francisco to shanghai last summer. the flight was aboard a 747-400 and was pretty smooth. other than that, the service and experience were less than par. the plane was dirty, seating was extremely cramped, and the entertainment was limited to small cabin screens (not ptvs) with those bulky and uncomfortable rubber tube headphones. the food was decent and the flight attendants were nice, and it was certainly nice flying a known us carrier. but next time i fly the pacific, unless it's continental, i will not fly a us carrier. from what i hear, cathay and singapore are the best going west.

I'd say Cathay or Singapore, and although Singapore's service is probably better, Cathay has a better safety record.

Safety isnt an issue with CX or SQ, they both have excellent safety records. The only one for SQ was that fateful wrong runway at taipei, which i dont think should throw up any red flags. It was truly a one time occurence accident.

Last month I flew on JL, SFO-NRT-MNL. The flight was good with PTVs in Y class. The plane was a 744 and on the way back it was a new c/s 744. Overall it was good with decent food and good flight attendants. But the flight was not smooth at all, the whole way there it was bumpy. But it makes for a better time. But due to JL's policy I was not allowed to see the cockpit.

Last year I flew on Korean Air from SFO. It was good but it was on an 772. The flight was smooth but no PTVs in Y, which was disappointing. But it was still a good flight.

For the best flight I would take JL, but next time I will try the go on an airline that allow cockpit visits ( if that is even possible now ).

9V-SVE, the only First Class segment I am flying on is the SQ flight from SFO-Hong Kong-SIN. The Korean Air segment from Beijing-Seoul and the SQ flight from Seoul-SFO will both be in Business Class. I think it is ridiculous when airlines fly planes that only have 2 classes. I quit flying Delta between the US and Europe for that very reason - they discontinued First Class in favor of some type of BusinessFirst or something like that.

Anyway, sorry to get off topic here! Back to the subject at hand.....

My personal preference would be to go for Cathay Pacific, and that would also give you a wider range of same airline connections in HKG as well.

I think Korean Air or Asiana would be a very good choice. I have flown on Korean Air several weeks ago and some of my friends also usually prefer Korean to Asia. I think they have improved there service a lot and nowadays also safety regulations are back on a high level again. So no worry to fly on them.

fly Korean Air ....

Ditto everyone else--Singapore or Cathay. I've flow UA and they aren't bad but I have heard that the service on Singapore is unbeatable. Granted the airfares for Singapore are a bit more than say UA,NW. Stay away from China Airlines or EVA. TPE isn't a great place to connect.

I have flown with Cathay across the Pacific from SFO on their A340s and 747s. The service is very good in business class and in coach. The stewards are so good in business class that they call you by your name once you sit in the seat.

Use Singapore Airlines, that's the number one asian airline that I would use. Their service is fantastic and the flight attendants are very well trained and courteous. The airplanes are very clean and the interior is very nice as well.
