US Airways To HI...why Not!?

Sat Aug 30, 2003 11:26 am

just out of curiousity...does anyone know how come US Airways (being...well use to be part of the "top 6" us carriers) never flew to Hawaii? Not just now but in years before. I would've thought w/ them having a presence in LAX and SFO area and a VERY strong hold on the east coast would've mean good loads (even for a B757)...what r ur thoughts?

well, i dont think you will see them flying to hawaii anytime soon, with the whole star alliance thing going on, but as for the past, theyve been in so much financial trouble the past few years, they probably didnt want to risk a failure in that route that could collapse the airline. look at america west in their early history, they started hawaii and japan services, they failed, and it almost destroyed them. i think they probably just dont or didnt want to take the risk of the route failing.

Well, USAir is mainly an east coast carrier anyway. Both of their hubs are in the east. Also, Hawaii is not a money maker for any of the airlines.

Back when they were big on the west coast, it might have made sense, but you have to remember as soon as USAir bought PSA it did not take long for the whole operation to go down hill. I guess at that point they were more concerned with surviving, rather than adding new and exciting routes. Recently (like in the last two years) I believe they considered it and even did a test flight or two from PHL. However, since they entered into the United code-share deal, I doubt we will ever see it. Look for more Caribbean and Central America service though.

Cody, my friend, USAir was NEVER big on the West Coast. The few flights Piedmont had were the extent of what became USAir. They bought PSA - that was a merger that never should have taken place. Now that they're US Airways, I don't think, even with a good economy, they're crossing the Pacific. I only hope they can keep the Atlantic routes up. I've heard they're good, but Piedmont and PSA were good. What happened? And what WILL happen?

Both of their hubs are in the east.

PIT hasn't been dropped just yet.
