United 747-400's Back To Heathrow

Sat Aug 30, 2003 4:46 pm

Effective 31 October, United will once again fly the 747-400 to London Heathrow. As far as I know the will be from Washington, Chicago & San Francisco, however according to www.ual.com, so far only UA918/919 to/from IAD is loaded.

Nice to see the 744 back!

Darn, if I'd known that, I might have booked UA instead of BA. But oh well. I did notice that when I reserved my tickets, that one check of the seat locator at UA showed that a 777 flight in November returning from LHR was practically full in coach (only 5 available seats in my price block and all in center aisle), so maybe that is the reason for the switching here rather then outbound passenger loads to LHR.

Beginning in November, United also puts a 744 on Chicago-Dulles and return.

Is it likely that we could see the 744 operating JFK-LHR before long?

Glad to hear it. I went down to LHR in May and wondered why there were only UA 777s there. (Never really knew they stopped using the 747 though!)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Britair:

Thank you so much for the "heads up!" This is good news for us SFO-based Flight Attendants, as a B747-400 to LHR will potentially open up more international positions on our roster. This is the first I'd heard about the return of -400s across the pond, and the news will be spread to my flying partners very quickly!

Have you checked the advance schedules for FRA? I'd love to see the -400 return to that route, as well....

Well, just checking UA's reservations system: so far, only the one IAD-LHR flight is changing to a -400. Where did you get the news about ORD and SFO?

On a side note, I was happy to see that our LAX-NRT route is reverting back to a -400 on October 31st!

Overall, are UA's 744s more comfortable than the 777s? Do the 744s have the PTVs? Otherwise, they are a bit more spacious.

My SFO-LHR flight in January is booked on a 744. I got seat 15A. Yippee!

FRA had more UA 744's this year then ever before. But only on the US Army charters and I suppose that they had "regular" F/A's on those flights. But you are right, it would be great to see some Jumbos return on scheduled flights.
This might sound crazy but I would really love to see a UA 763 @ FRA... Maybe they should start a third IAD or ORD flight with it...  Laugh out loud

I am very happy to hear that United's 747s will be heading back across the pond! I love to see them at LHR!!!!! Renegotiating those leases has really allowed United to operated the aircraft on more routes.

Yep.....I work at LHR for UA.........LHR/IAD from end of October, then LHR/ORD from January, then LHR/LAX from April...........you won't see 744 to JFK from LHR as traffic demand for UA on this route is not strong - not a hub. Unfortunately we lose LHR/EWR from end of October

I'm surprised that demand on the JFK - LHR route is not strong enough to warrant a 744. I have flown that route about 3 times in the past year and each time it was packed . . .

Anyone know where that EWR-LHR slot will go? some have speculated that UA could possibly add PHL-LHR now because of the US/UA code-share. It would be nice to see a UA 763/772 in PHL, but that's at least a year away, if ever

Okay, so if 744s are going back to LHR, where will the 772s go? Looks like its shaping up to be a busy fall/winter schedule to Europe if 774s are back.

Laxintl,

Are the 2-cabin 777s going back to the lessors? Just noticed that there are no 777 flying to Hawaii next spring.

UA is still in the process of discussing the fate of several aircraft as part of the Ch11 process. All four of the B777's that have departed were 3 class aircraft.

To answer above:
LHR/JFK has so much traffic, and no feed for UA. AA used to have 7 or 8 a day, and even they're down to 5 now. You won't see 744 to JFK....
The change of guage to 744 for IAD is currently planned for winter schedule, but may be extended. ORD will be for whole of 2004, as will LAX.
As for EWR slot, many alliance partners are "baby sitting" UA slots at LHR which were inherited from Pan Am. I'm sure this one will go the same way. UA would love to have LHR/DEN but have been told they will only get it out of LGW. For now, that is not an option being considered.

I am not (currently) aware of plans to fly 744 LHR/SFO. We did have these 3 years back on both UA955 and UA931.....currently still plan to use 777-IGW during 2004....but as with all things - subject to change. Have not heard about FRA routes....

Clipper7:

In Apollo, it shows SFO UA954/955 going to a -400 on January 1st! LAX still shows a B777, as do all ORD flights.

I can't wait to see the other changes! I hope they'll make it official soon.

It's good to hear that UA may operate international flights out of PHL. The only trans-atlantic service we have from domestic airlines is from US. I am really happy that BA is sending their 74's to PHL instead of the 77's, i love 744's

My friend from UAL told me that UAL was able to negotiate some damn good deals on the 747-400's, and that now it is actually cheaper for them to operate the 747-400's than the 777's. With all the paycuts for the pilots, and shall we say the lack of demand for a 747 these days, I guess they got a good deal on the payments...

What is the fascination? The 747's have to be the most uncomfortable aircraft to ride in coach. I know it is a damn big plane but it is nothing like the 777 as far as comfort, IMHO. I have had middle seats on many international flights with both types of aircraft and the whale has to be the worst.
