Excess Bagage On Low Cost Carriers

Sun Aug 31, 2003 12:04 am

Hey,

I'm flying AMS-BHX-DUB next week and just KNOW for sure that my suitcases are gonna be over the weight limit. I don't even know what the weight limit is on My Travel Lite and Ryanair.

Does anyone know what it is on both carriers?

Any advice?

Cheers

Finally: airlines with reasonable luggage weight restrictions. I cringe when I see folks coming up with 100 pounds of luggage; airlines are not moving services.

Heh... 100 lbs? Packing light. I recall working inbound CP flights from LHR.... now those are big friggin' suitcases! Four to five feet long, a foot and a half deep to two feet deep, and three or four feet high... with a million wheels on the bottom, and tied with a length of ugly yellow (or blue) nylon rope. And they weighed 150 lbs! Ah, the memories.....

But yeah... some LCCs do charge excess bag fees if you're carrying 20 pieces of luggage.... and they'll tell you that your excess bags might not make the flight, as they are a lower priority than someone else's single suitcase. I recall some charter carriers used to charge hefty overweight fees, but I haven't heard or seen that amongst LCCs up in my neck of the woods.... usually anything over 50 lbs is most often considered a "Heavy" bag.

Here at WestJet each guest is allowed to check 2 pieces up to 70lbs/32kg per piece, and carry on 2 pieces not exceeding 22lbs/10kg each. Excess baggage fees are only $25CAD+tax ($26.75) for an extra checked bag, or overweight checked bag. Which is VERY reasonable. I've heard of some charters charging as much as $5 per kg over, and they only allowed up to 50lbs!
