The Essence Of Flying

Sun Aug 31, 2003 1:52 pm

You know....... Its never ceased to amaze me that every time I fly I find myself dumbstruck in some odd way about just how spectacular these pieces of metal we call airplanes really are...

But rarely do I ever get the feeling... the tingling inside, the excitement, the thrill and the adventurous feeling all in one where I practically explode with joy about flying... It takes a lot: a great plane, seatmates, crew, clouds etc, like a certain checmical combination to REALLY get that effect.. the "wow"

Maybe Im crazy, but does anyone else feel this way? What puts the "wow" into flying for you? What does it take to make one flight among all stand out from the rest, and what does it take to fill you with the excitement that Im explaining (albeit poorly) above? Ill probably regret saying this, but cruising among the clouds at 35,000 feet at sunset.. its almost spiritual......

I honestly think that the last time I got the essence of "Flying" as you put it was when I went to SIN. Nothing like sitting in WBC on a 747-400 and feeling this massive bird take off and going someplace exotic. Granted the service could have been better although I've learned to accept certain things from the industry.

Flying domestically doesn't do much for me anymore. I probablly won't get that feeling again until i go overseas again. Hopefully soon. I want to take a friend of mine who is a F/A for my airline to AMS. He hasn't been on a 747 yet and I think if we went we would go 744 one way from DTW and the new A333 the other. Knowing that he will be thrilled will deffenetely create that excitement for me.

I guess the thing that does it for me is that magical moment when you break through the top of the clouds into bright sunlight and a blue sky - and then skim along just above the cloud-tops. That give you a mix of the sensation of speed, as well as the pure joy of flying! Of course that's only one of many instances, but its probably my most vivid one. I also love flying at night with a big full moon lighting the sky. Landing is pretty good, too!

Well, every time without fail that I lift off, I get this sensation in my chest...an "excitement"....it truly is a magical thing and I enjoy every minute of it.

I also love breaking over the haze layer (back home in TN it gets REALLY hazy in the summer) into the crisp, cool, calm air...it's very serene...gives me goosebumps.

Short final. That's what does it for me.

Coming in with the engine(s) at idle, gliding over the treetops or the snow or water, the approach set up perfectly... to me that is the most exciting moment of flight.

It really is the greatest high. You can explain it via physics and Bernouli's principle, or thrust=drag and lift=weight, or through complex aerodynamic math, but when it comes down to it flying is an essence of pure inexplicable magic. I'm sure each of you know exactly what I mean, it is the common bond we have here as airliners.net members.

Great post. Everytime I fly, no matter short the flight or small the plane, I feel the "essence" of flying and feel its magic. Everytime I take off, I think to myself "Next time I touch land I will be XX miles away". Flying is fun!!!
