Transit Times Between O'Hare Terminals

Mon Sep 01, 2003 5:15 am

I'll be taking an international trip in November, and it involves changing terminals at ORD with only about 1 hr 25 minutes to change planes (assuming everything goes right).

I'll be arriving at Terminal 3 and my departing flight is in Terminal 5, the international terminal. Arrival and departure times will be in the prime time hours (7:49PM to 9:15PM) and it looks like I will have to go through security at T5 to get to my flight. Both terminals sit pretty much next to each other on the ORD map, but I've never been to them as my trips normally take me through the United terminals.

So, I figure if there are no delays in getting to O'Hare, I should be fine. But I would like to know what to expect should I encounter a delay coming in that won't affect outgoing flights (i.e. nothing related to a system wide weather delay which tends to back up everything evenly). How quickly should I be able to get from 3 to 5 using the rail system? When at T5, how much of a line can I expect at security in mid November on a Tuesday? Are there any different restrictions for international customers vs. domestic ones or is TSA using the same check in procedures at all ORD terminals?

Coming back I shouldn't have these problems as I will have a 5 hour layover in ORD (with a bit of that needed to get through customs of course). Thanks in advance.

Consider yourself lucky.
On October 17 I arrive at ORD on UA 967 from AMS, scheduled 1:25PM. My itinerary says I continue on UA 1111 to LAS at 2:45PM. That's EIGHTY MINUTES to clear immigration, customs, go to terminal number "I don't know" and through security?!?!?!?!?!?!

What i have found at ORD the main problem is that T5 is a distance away fro the other Terminals ,and has a train operating between all terminals ala LGW.FRA.DFW EWR etc, and this can get rather crowded ,meaning a lot of pax arrive at T5 at the same time.Which means you may finish up the end of a long queue at checkin

That's cutting it a bit close. Count on 45 minutes to 1 hour to get between T-3, through security in T-5 and to your gate.

Also, it goes without saying to make sure your bags get checked straight through to your final destination.

What airline are you flying? If they're both a part of the same alliance, try and see if you can get all your boarding passes when you first check-in.

Good luck,

JMChadek,

You shouldn't have a problem going from terminal 3 to 5, the train that operates between the terminals will get you there rite away. It may be around a three minute ride between the terminals. The Airport Transit System (ATS) is free so you dont have to worry about paying and operates 24/7

Just like CTbarnes said, try to get your boarding passes when you first check-in if its with an airline with an alliance. If you have to get your pass at T5 going thru security is fast. Last time I had to take a flight from T5 it was the same time span as your taking your flight. Took five minutes to go through security.

Thanks guys. The flights in question are American Eagle for my domestic parts and British Airways for the international portions. I booked through Expedia and had to get paper tickets, so I might already have the boarding passes anyway. Naturally I'll still check in at the counter if it is required. I believe these airlines are at least code sharing, so hopefully I'll be able to check my bags all the way. But still, I'll call the airlines to make sure once I get closer to my departure time.

Thanks again.
