MIA New Runway

Mon Sep 01, 2003 7:41 am

I can't find any information on the new runway, and was wondering if anyone has a map of were it location will be?

Thanks
Matt

MIA sure needs that runway. I think that ATL could use a new runway. When I fly out of there the wait is just so long. Sometimes 20-25 planes. But it is good to see after 9/11 that people are getting back into flying.

I have seen ATL queue get up to 25 aircraft they do need a new runway bad.

How much closer can the runways be at MIA that's like 8,000 ft right? How close is that to the minimum distance and how dose it compare to other parallel runways in the US?

Thanks for the map OPNLguy.

The runways seem to be very close to each other. Will there be simultaneous landings like SFO's runways which are also close to each other as well?

I read where MIA 8/26 is only 800 feet north of the other runway (09L/27R), which is pretty close. SFO's 28L and 28R are only 600-700 feet apart, so MIA's 8/26 is close. Like SFO, they won't be able to run parallel or simultaneous ILS approaches, as the 800 foot distance is well below the respective 2,500 and 4,300 foot requirements, distances that most other airports have. I presume 08/26 has (or will have) an ILS on each end, and being an "outboard" runway (relative to the terminal) they'll use it primarily for arrivals while using 09L/27R primarily for departures.

Well, the master plan for ATL includes a new runway; along with converting Concourse-D into a terminal, as well as creating a new terminal across from the original two.

"the dirt actually gets transported OVER 285."

The better part of that project is complete. The conveyor system that carried dirt from the mine, over 285 to the runway site has been dismantled. Construction of a cement retaining wall along I-285 has begun and the rerouting of all secondary roadways through the runway area is complete. From what I understand, the project is running ahead of schedule.

MIA doesn't seem that busy though...quite interesting that they needed another runway. but wait don't they use runway 30, 9L or 9r and the reciprocal of thoses runways. why they need another one. traffic isn't that hot though? Am i right? or Wrong?

The new runway at Miami is quite a political one more so than it is a useful one. The close seperation does not allow for standard or close-in simultaneous instrument approaches per regulations, and also increases the runway incursion probability. The obstruction situation is also a factor because of the location of the runway. The other poor planning part of the equation is the assigned designator of 8. The new runway should be 9L, and the older one parallel to it should be 9R. The south runway, because it is much farther from the other two, should be 8. This would of eliminated any confusion and reduced the chances for a misunderstanding of the runway schematic since the right and left assignment is more for parallel runways that are side by side.

MIA isn't busy?

Ha! It's AA's gateway to South and Central America and the Caribbean, of course it is busy.

Yes, that is correct for MIA was always very busy with those international and domestic flight, too. Of course they do about it with alot of those passengers and cargo planes. They will make improved need with more runway expansion into north side of MIA. Well, talk ya later!  Smile

Funny you should say that because during the five hours I spent at MIA this past Sunday the ATC had to advise at least one aircraft to check that his approach was not to the wrong runway. It was a biz-jet which was on approach to RWY 8 when he should have been landing on 9L. After a quick correction he landed on 9L.

From what I have heard the new runway is closed after the ceremony... Something to do with the labeling of the runway... I am not sure and to be honest do not understand it.... When I drove home from work, the runway was closed the other day with a big X on it!

They should probably rename it 8L/26R and rename 9L/27R to 9C/27C.

MIA's 08/26, according to the photo linked above, doesn't have precision approach markings -- only the touchdown zone markings. Will they even outfit the runway with ILS? It could be used primarily for departures, which would have to cross 09L/27R, a la PHL, but I could see that causing delays and other problems.

I agree with the poster who said it would have made more sense to designate the new runway 09L/27R. They could have minimized confusion further by designating the existing north-side runway 09C/27C, keeping the 09R/27L designation on the south-side runway.

Anyone know why they didn't do that?

"today was a long queue to take-off, because of holiday"

Actually, the long lines for departure today were due to TSTMS to the north. Departures were being slowed significantly off the NOONE and NOTWO intersections, as has been the case for about a week now.
