Crazy Flight School Prices These Days (Rentals)

Mon Sep 01, 2003 3:13 pm

Hey all, i'm a recent graduate of a private pilot program. A lot of times these school advertise that one can get a license in min time for around $6000-7000. Thats BS. I did nime in a 172 in the min time and it cost nearly 10G's. In the Ontario area rentals run around $110.00 per hour for a beat up 172 and a new one will likely hit $130.00. Just wondering what are some of the prices in your areas. I might consider training elsewhere if the prices are reasonable. I heard in some places in the states and hour in a 172 will run $65-$70. Any truth to this??? Thanks

$65/hr 172 here...although the school I did my training at went under from rising insurance costs shortly after 9/11.

I did my training back in '94-'96. The plane was $45 / hr. I paid about $3500 for the complete training program. You can still do it for that if you look in the right places.

Hi,

I trainned on a Katana at YQB (Pro-Aviation). I paid $90CDN per hour...My licence cost me around $9kcdn.

3 month ago, I rented a Cesna 172 SP almost new for circa $130cdn at Montreal St-Hubert and YQB (both Pro-Aviation). Great feeling to pilot that machine and it is a good school.

Here, in Berlin Germany, an old Cesna 172 is around 180euro per hour. ($240cdn). Not a good value.

From my experience, best place to learn and cheapest place are in Canada.

I did my training in beautiful San Antonio Tx at Alpha Tango Flying Services. Current prices:

C152: 56 USD (-10% OFF if you pay a 10 hours block)
C172: 76 USD (same deal)
C310: 110 USD (same deal)
Instructor rate: 30 USD

The airplanes are not new but are well maintained and the weather is excellent.

On Long Island, NY I pay 107/hr for fuel, instructor and aircraft. There are better deals but I trusted the maintanence of this school more.

The place I rented from this summer was $68 a hour wet for a 172N, and $48 an hour wet for a Grumman Trainer. I think they are quite reasonable prices.
