ITS Official! I'm Going To Fly Again!

Tue Sep 02, 2003 7:12 am

We just made our reservations... Sep 11 from FLL-ATL on DL!!!!

my concern is do you think that 2 people who made one-way reservations on 9/11 with specific seat requests will be searched carefully... I hope not!!!

What a self-gloss post....

People here fly every day and thankfully aren't compelled to start a topic announcing it.

this is a special event for me... it has been more than 3 years, possibly 4 since i last flew. I am really excited and i did have a question if you read the end of the post.

I forgot how cool it is to hear your dad putting your name on the ticket!

i do have another question.... we have not gotten a new medallian tag since ours expired in 2/03. do you think that that means that i am no longer a medallian or that they stopped putting tags on carry-on luggage?

Congrats! I easily remember being your age and the excitement that I felt long in advance of a planned flight. Just looking at the ticket (we didn't have e-tickets back then) was exciting in itself. You'd have thought that I had a check for a million dollars in my hand.

Have a great flight.

yeah, enjoy the trip. Flying doesn´t have to be a mundane everyday experience. People who think it is, definately take flight for granted!

If you haven't flown in three or four years, you are not a Medallion. And there are current Medallion luggage tags, just not personalized. I know because I have them as I'm a current DL Medallion member. Unless you flew 30 segments last year on Delta or 25,000 miles, you aren't a Medallion. If you haven't flown in three years, that's how long it has been since you were one.

Guys.....give flairport a break. Here is some advice flairport to minimize scrutiny and time at security check point:

Since we are at alert yellow (elevated), security is not as tight as it can be. 1) Check any luggage you can....the less carry on that has to go through the x-rays, the less likely it and you will be searched. 2) Turn on your cellphone and place it in the trays before going though the checkpoint...cell phones will set off the checkpoint trust me on this one. 3) Have a form of ID and your boarding pass in hand before you get to the checkpoint entrance 4) Dress smart...if you have any other shoes on besides tennis shoes....expect to take them off they will ask you to. 5) Follow any and all instructions given by any TSA agent.

You can make it through securtiy in 10mins or less if you are smart about it. And above all have fun. Good luck.

1) I am not checking luggage, it is a 2 day trip and we have most of our stuff down in Florida already, plus my dad nexer checks luggage... we have 1 bag and a laptop (i know what to do with the laptop!!!!)
2) turn ON or OFF your cell phone? can't i just show it to them and then possibly go through or follow their directions?
3) i'm 16, so ID is not a problem... i have a permit just in case.
4) I only have tennis shoes... packed light for the trip down here (driving) so i forgot all of my bathingsuits and other shoes  Sad!!!
5) Are the TSA agents at FLL friendly and if i have any questions, do they answer them?

The good thing is that it is at FLL on Delta, so it won't be too busy!

my dad is the medallian member. he didn't fly 30 segments last year, but we were silver medallians until 2/03 so i DO know that we are NOT SILVER, but we could still posibbly be medellians. (and if we are not, we will be soon if i can help it!  Smile)

Thanks guys. I look foward to being one of the LAST people to expirence (except for checked baggage) the TSA and security in general and the gates areas since 9/11/01, 2 years to the day that it happened. the thoughts of those that died on that day will be in my head, but i will be really excited at the same time. I WILL WRITE A TRIP REPORT!

Then you aren't a Medallion, your father was. Your post stated that you were a Medallion in the past. Anyway, if he didn't requalify for silver, then he is no longer on the Medallion tier.

Making Medallion again will be more difficult now. This year they changed the program rules. Unless you travel at the top fares (such as full fare and the couple near it) then you must fly twice as much as before in order to make the same Medallion levels. So buying the cheapest online fares, you need to now fly 60 segments for even Silver Medallion with Delta (which really is not worth it.... the tier gives little benefit other than access to certain shorter lines).

OH FYI, Delta security at FLL is quite busy! I have gone through it before, and my father recently went through there. If you are in FLL at peak times, allow PLENTY of time to get through security. I dropped my dad off 1 1/2 hrs before departure, no bags checked, and he almost missed his flight..

You have to have your cell phone turned on and place it in the tray to go through the x-ray machine. If you leave it on your body, it will set off the security checkpoint. I made the mistake of not placing it in the tray when I flew back in May 02 and the TSA jumped all over me. Just don't try it. You will loose this one.

The TSA will answer any and all questions you might have. Since some get paid minimum wage and by the hr, many might not be friendly. I have had great luck with them in MSY (my home airport), IAH (I fly into and out of alot), MCO, ATL, SEA, YVR, DFW, and FLL. But, ask any question you might have. They will answer you.

the medallian program is worthless now, anyway... i board right after them, anyway.
Security wise... remember, its 9/11... not too busy, although the plane seems busy for the day but not by FLL standerds (full)!!!

doesn't the cell phone on ruin it in the mechine? what if i just take it out and show it to them... turn it on and off. just like tthe computer. When i do the computer (before or after the x-ray?) can i ask them?

how is security at FLL in the DL terminal set up... they barly had enough room when there was no TSA so i don't know how they did it.

Your cell phone won't break if it goes through the X-Ray, same thing with your computer. They force you to put everything through the X-ray. If you don't, you won't be seeing it ever again.

you can request a hand search, right?

if they take something, can you get it returned after your trip?

You can request a hand search of professional photography equipment.

Your computer and cell phone are oblivious to x-rays, as are 98% of cameras and just about all other technology.

I travel a lot, and have developed some special habits to get me through security in a jiffy. For example:
- I put my cell phone, keys, pens, change, watch and belt into the front pocket of my computer bag for quick retrieval later
- I wear loafers that I take off and put in a tray
- I put my laptop in another tray
- I say "hello how are you" to the agents, and show my boarding pass and ID with a genuinely friendly smile
- I walk through the detector and never get searched

And the medallion program is not really worthless now. I have already earned around 200,000 Skymiles this year, and over 70,000 qualifying miles.

Hope you have a great trip!

TSA is salaried and not paid by the hour unless things have changed. Yes, smile will start things off on a good note. Do not wear lace up shoes, because more than likely you will need to take them off to go thru security. Just make it easy on yourself....

Hey everybody,

Last Feb. I flew DL FLL-ATL and we were lucky enough to get an a/c change from a 767 to a 777. That was definatly the nicest plane I have ever been on!!!

First of all, My brother flies ALB-BTV one-way and has gotten a orange sticker at least once, as far as I remember. He also flies BTV-ALB one-way. I congratulate you on flying, even though I really wouldn't suggest putting a thread up about it.

Luckily you haven't gotten any of the awards people on Non-Av get from Matt D and KROC.
What now?

I flew song from FLL-EWR on the day of that "cell phone" thing... security was VERY tight in Terminal B, but stll, friendly officers and such... Terminal B sucks tho to bring stuff to do if your arriving early!!!!

Have a great flight!

this is cut and pasted from a thread i was about to post until i remembered this existed:

I am proud to say that i am flying tomorrow and that my flight is AT LEAST 95% FULL!!!!!!!!!! (4 seats in coach and like 12-14 in first on a DL 764!) I really see this as a victory for America, even though small. It shows that we are not afaraid to fly on 9/11!

2 questons:

1) last year, what % of people booked on 9/11 actually showed up for their flight?

2) even with code yellow still in place (of course subject to change tomorrow) will security be tighter?

and a 3) that i thought of just now:

do you think that the FA's, Pilots, or gate agents will mention anything or have patroitic music playing?

May God bless America and the Souls of all who died that day... they will be in my heart tomorrow, espically during the flight.
