Why No Low-cost To Lisbon?

Tue Sep 02, 2003 7:19 am

A thread on another forum once again reminded me of Go's old route to Lisbon from STN, which as some of you will remember, eventually went the way of the KEF flight i.e. they scrapped the route.

Why is this, and why have no other LCCs in the UK (and there are a lot of them now) neglected what I believe to be a very 'obvious' candidate for a LCC?

I think Go dropped the Lisbon route because of the high airport costs in Lisbon meant that the fares werent exactly low-cost or something like that.

I believe their fares started at around £90 return, which wasn't a great deal cheaper than BA or TAP, who soon lowered their fares to around £110-118.

Would have been better to undercut BA and TAP a bit more and make the decision for the customer a bit more difficult.  Big grin

Hi!

I think there's no need for low-cost airlines to LIS, at this moment you can have fares from LIS, FAO or OPO to London about 100 Euros, so that's really good and that's why I think noone really wants to explore the portuguese market. I also don't think that STD was a good idea too! TP now flies LGW and LHR and BA the same, so that's quite good.

Hiii

I think that FARO is the leader on Low Coast airlines...

The majority all fly to Faro with fares in Summer near €120, and on winter near €50.... Imagine... FAO - STD for €50 on Easyjet.

The airlines that fly to faro on Low coast system are Ryanair, Easyjet, Go (but i belive that go is integrated on Easyjet), and perhaps others that don't came to my mind this time. Big grin

The Faro airport is an airport directed to charter operations, and because of that the Airport fares to the airlines are low, so it is a very competitive airport, we are now having more movments then Lisbon or Porto, in terms of number of aircrafts, not passengers... for that Lisbon is Number 1, but aircrafts, we are the BEST... eheheh LONG LIVE FARO AIRPORT.... Big thumbs up

Three low cost carriers have tried Lisbon and stopped flying (AB Airlines, Debonair and Go) and all three stopped flying there due to the high cost of ground handling and landing fees. Apparantly there is still a quasi monopoly on handling shared between the airport and TAP, who really don't have the impetus to lower costs.

Similar situation in WAW and KEF.
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Hi Thomas

Thanks for that impressive list. To be honest, the question focused on UK LCCs, but it was very interesting to see all those other airlines flying in to! I suppose I could connect with 4U, although it seems very difficult to find those 19 euro fares sometimes!  Crying

Bestwestern,

That is interesting, thanks for the info. I guess it's the same story at many other airports though.

Obviously easyjet personnel were alerted to this thread and acted accordingly.

Anymore requests?
