LTU Discontinues Kabul Flights - Security Threat

Wed Sep 03, 2003 3:41 am

The German online news magazine SPIEGEL ONLINE reports that LTU discontinues its weekly DUS/KBL service due to a security warning issued by the German Federal Foreign Office.

LTU got only granted traffic rights to KBL under the precondition that it would decide on the continuation of its flights on a daily assessment of security in KBL.

The German pilot union Cockpit which had always criticized LTU's flights to KBL as irresponsible welcomed the decision of the German tourist carrier.

I guess that means the planned www.airevents.de aviation enthusiast flights to Kabul won't take place then?

You know, sometimes a little use of common sense is pretty helpful to predict the outcome of certain business ventures.

In other words: I'm not surprised at all.

Too bad, it would be really great if the service would have been kept. But I can understand that there are a few things speaking against sending an A332 there. If I make it to Kabul with the German army I hope to then see "a plane from home" there when I have some spare time and go spotting at the airport. Laugh out loud

You might remember that yours truly shook his head in disbelief as soon as the decision to fly to KBL was published.

In this very forum I asked myself how it is possible that the German Airforce only brings in C-160 Transalls, because these are equipped with counter measures against SAMs, and LTU rolls in a brand new shiny 332…

I´m glad this irresponsible stunt found an end. Apparently there´s some form of intelligence left in LT´s legal department after all. I wouldn´t want to imagine the legal aftermath of a shot down of such a flight…

If I'm not mistaken, there was actually only one LT flight to KBL, which was the inaugural flight. From the second week on, the KBL flight was always cancelled.

Alex,
I think they flew twice. The first one and then two got cancelled and the fourth was then the second... That would mean that KBL got flooded with 600 extra seat in just four weeks.  Laugh out loud
If only the NATO troops would really go for it and make Afgahnistan a safe place. I mean it did not take long after WWII to get peace to rule in Europe...

Are there actually any pictures from the two flights besides those from dpa and the other news agencies?

Are you sure?

Three years until a stable currency was established.
Four years until a successor state to the Great German Empire was founded.
Five years until food rationing was ended.
Ten years until the last POWs came home.
45 years until full sovereignty was re-gained.

That's a very good decision.
I don't understand this "new fashion" for airliners who all wish to open or re-open so quickly flights to KBL or SDA !!! (BA, NW, VS, AF, LO etc...)
Of course there is certainly some money to make... but money is not everything.
NOBODY, and certainly not the US Army, can guarantee the security of such commercial flights in these countries for the moment.

Personnaly, I refuse the AF flights I am programmed on, to TLV and ALG...and it would take a long time before I accept to fly to KBL or SDA... Angry
