DL Ending Alliance With NW/CO

Wed Sep 03, 2003 4:09 am

I heard rumors about Delta ending its codeshare alliance with Northwest/Continental. I think that was true, considering Northwest's ever increasing pace to join Skyteam. Is this true???

I sure hope not, too many positive things have come down for the customer (me) that ending this would be a tragedy!

If they are not making money from it - then, well, maybe.

Deltabobo,
can you give a source please....
There are so many rumors nowadays.
Given the possibility of KLM to team up with Air France, AF's alliance with DL, DL's alliance with NW and CO, NW and CO's codeshare with KL.......
Delta surely will not exclude itself from such a powerful (Sky)team

Per my VERY high-up sources at CO, the rumor is utter nonsense. CO, NW, and DL will only be EXPANDING their agreements with each other, not ending them.

The alliance will become stronger.

It wouldn't make any sense, anyway. They just started. They haven't even fully integrated their marketing agreements. It would strike me as poor mgt at DL if they did pull out, not giving the concept a real chance after, I'm certain, spending a lot of money on it.

As a Delta contract employee, I have heard nothing about it, but I heard rumors from a friend that he is so discouraged that Delta is taking away the segments from the Medallion program. I personally don't know anything about that. But as far as the alliance program between NW/CO/DL, it is fully functional here at GSP. NW ramp rats come into DL ops, because, we have a bigger space and better air conditioning  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

DL is a member of Skyteam.

but I heard rumors from a friend that he is so discouraged that Delta is taking away the segments from the Medallion program.

Maybe he's just pissy.

Yeah, NW doesn't get segments on DL elite-qualifying.
DL is further away from the alliance than NW/CO/KL (KLm and NW really close) If this is true DL is not even gonna get considered on my next JFK-SVO run.

But most likely this is another uncredible rumor. NW doesn't get points on Song...
What now?

If you're going to create a post, please don't write a misleading headline. You worded this thread declaring it is fact that Delta has ended their allianace, and this is not true.

All you do with completely inaccurate headlines like this is waste people's time.

I agree with ORD. Delta is going full steam ahead with the CO/NW alliance. Too many positives for all sides. The only thing holding it up right now is some minor issues regarding KLM and their need to agree with NW's involvement. Apart from that - we are moving full steam ahead!

The point about segments has been true since the beginning of the year. DL no longer recognizes segments when figuring Medallion status, period. Not even on DL flights.

NW and CO will not be in DLs timetable. The codeshare is just beginning. You will only see a few flights right now. For example, look for SEA-NRT. That is an NW flight.

As for NWs interest in Skyteam. Delta wants that. It helps them serve Asia w/o using their own equipment. Same with CO in Latin America/Caribbean.

It would be beneficial for KLM/CO/DL to join Skyteam, for every airline. Delta, NW, and CO's combined market shares in the US add up to beyond those of AA or UA. AF, AZ, and KLM in Europe all add up to what Oneworld and Star have. Skyteam or Wings cannot compete with Star/OneWorld alone, but combined they can.

I flew 3 segments on DL yesterday and at ATL, there were some flights shown as a codeshare with CO at the gates.

There is NO WAY....the ground has already been laid for NW and CO to eventually join SkyTeam...And yes NW and CO are not yet in the timetable, geez they only recently received permission to codeshare. This isn't something that happens overnight. Nothing like rumors spread by people who do not have any idea.......

I second the posts by those who think the Topic / Headline on this thread on highly misleading. A couple of question marks would have made the topic a lot clearer.

I imagine that none of the above carriers will ever merge...right now they are going to get all of the benefits of network integration, without the headaches of fleet rationalization, seniority lists, or corporate culture conflicts. Do you really think an airline with such strong union attitudes such as NW would merge with Delta?

You guys are taking this the wrong way. I am not trying to spread lies, but I was chatting with a friend the other day and he told that NW/CO/DL is ending their alliance on October 1. I didn't believe him at first, but I wasn't positively sure either, so I posted a thread here to see if anybody else in the world actually heard about it. But since everyone has been talking about it, I guess that rumor is totally false.

This is one of the most ridiculous rumors I’ve ever read on a.net.

DL/NW/CO began codesharing earlier this summer. So far, only a handful of flights from each airline carry codes… they spent a lot of money and time getting to where they are today, and they’re going to dump it before things really get going? I think not.

FWIW, various sources have indicated that DL has enjoyed a moderate degree of success by placing its code on select NW transpac flights.

This is not true...Delta is getting ready to transition to the New Midfield Terminal to join NWA and CO... they will be operating out of there within a few weeks...

NW is moving to Terminal 3 (DL terminal) @ CVG soon as well.

I can't imagine it would be pulled so quickly after all the investment into the program thus far.

Not even maybe. In fact, look for ticket counter and gate consolidation coming to a city near you.

Why pay for three counters when you could have one? Why pay for 10 gates when you only need 6?

Why pay for a ticket counter anyway. New computer systems allow you to check in at any counter in the airport or off site. If you need a change... Call 1-800 number. The ticket counter will essentially be staffed by SkyCaps under contract from the airlines.

The ticket counter as we know it will be gone in 5 years at the network carriers. SWA will be the exception.

You don't think it's coming? Just watch.
