MAS Recruits European-language Crew

Wed Sep 03, 2003 7:15 am

Someone asked before how come Malaysia Airlines does not recruit European crew members and what would they look like in the sarong Kebaya...

Reading their latest Annual Report - they have stated that their priorities in recruiting cabin crew now lie in Language skills and following the successful introduction of Mandarin-speaking crew, their priorities now laid with recruiting Spanish, French, German and Afrikaans speaking cabin crew amongst other languages.

So - in theory - we may well be seeing a few blue-eyed, blonde crewmembers sporting the Sarong Kebaya soon.

Well well!

A Far East airline with non Asian/Oriental looking cabin crew. That should be something to look out for.

It's weird that they are going to hire crew from Spain instead of Argentina for its Spanish-speaking passengers considering the fact that the only Spanish-speaking country they serve is Argentina. Wouldn't it be easier for them to hire Spanish speaking FA from America or Argentina? What about Dutch and Italian passengers?

Also, their annual report reported that they are considering code-share deal with ANA - wonder if this will work out.

If Mas777 had quoted the annual report correctly, what MH said was that they would be recruiting French, German, Afrikaan and Spanish speaking crew. So, if a Malaysian girl with the right qualities and speaks French or Spanish comes along, she might be recruited.

In the same vein, an Argentinian would be Spanish "speaking". No where does it say that MH will only recruit Spanish speaking crew from Spain.

Please read my post again...

..."If Mas777 had quoted the annual report correctly, what MH said was that they would be recruiting French, German, Afrikaan and Spanish speaking crew..."

I never quoted them as hiring Spanish-speakers from Spain. I agree completely that a Malaysian satisfying the language credentials may well be hired but as stated in my post 'THEORETICALLY' this opens up the idea of Caucasian cabin crew.

I once had a Japanese crew member (and MAS has many) who proudly spoke French on board my flight from London and her badge had the Union Jack, Japanese Flag and the French Tricolor but interestingly no Malaysian flag... so I guess Malay would not be compulsory for foreign cabin crew.

I was actually refering to Odie's post, not yours.

But actually as stated by another member on a trip report, Malaysia uses Mexican national cabin crews on their run to EZE. They used to fly to Mexico so this is the reason.

Actually there is nothing wrong with hiring Europeans or even South Americans. Afterall MAS already hired Indians and Chinese crew.

Nothing wrong, it is true. But the Indians and Chinese are still Asians, and they look fine wearing the Kebaya. But put a Caucasian there, blonde haired and blue eyed... something just does not fit. Maybe they should have another uniform (business suits) for the Caucasian crew? Just like Thai has a different uniform for their Japanese crew.

Lol - Qantas has been doing this for the last 80 years.

P.S: I object to the term "far east" - east of where? Should I say you're from the far west? (j/k)

Interesting - in over 20 years of flying with Malaysia Airlines - I have yet to see any stewardess or steward on board any MAS flights who are not Asian.

Maybe it was because it was on the south african route so they had a few locals on the flight

By the way if you recall the rather recent article about a guy who proposed to his girl onboard a MAS 737 had an African steward onboard.
