OTP Stats For July.. Westjet #1 Again!

Wed Sep 03, 2003 11:22 am

The U.S. Department of Transportation released its On-Time Performance stats for the month of July today with the following top 10 results.

1. Westjet 92.0%
2. Skywest 91.6%
3. JetBlue 88.5%
4. Southwest 84.0%
5. Northwest 82.7%
6. America West 82.0%
7. Alaska 81.2%
8. United 80.7%
9. Continental 80.4%
10. Delta 79.3

Average for all carriers: 79.7%

While Westjet is not included in the U.S. Department of Transportation statistics, I thought I would include it with July's U.S. results. What is even more interesting is that Westjet has topped all U.S. carriers for three months in a row (May, June, July)!!

For your information, OTP is based on A15.

In the U.S., reporting OTP is a federal regulation but in Canada it is not. Westjet is very proud of its accomplishments in the past months, and they now include a link to their OTP stats on their website under 'About Us'.

On a side note, here are the statistics for cancellations for the month of July:

1. JetBlue 0%
2. Continental .1%
3. America West .2%
4. (all tied) Westjet, AirTran, Delta, United .4%
5. (tied) ATA, ExpressJet .6%

It seems as though WestJet can do no wrong. I like WestJet and fly on them whenever I can. I am sure however that there is a segment of the population who is just waiting for a screwup in order to jump on it and hold it out as an "I told you so". Until then...good job WestJet and keep on doing what you're doing, it seems to be working for you!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In all honestly it really isn't fair to compare US airlines with Westjet. In Canada the only real airport that experiences major traffic congestion is YYZ while in the states many of the major airports have this problem. Also with Westjet having a larger proportion of flights to small airports like Comox or Abbotsford, we should expect Westjet's on-time performance to be quite high. Nevertheless, 92% is an excellent on-time performance and should be something Westjetters should be proud of.

You're right, I am proud of this accomplishment!

You're also right when it comes to Canada vs US congestion. These statistics are the only comparison Westjet has to any other airlines as OTP stats are not required to be reported in Canada. With the recent announcement that Westjet will be providing OTP details on their website further enhances good PR with present and future passengers.

OTP has been a HUGE focus at Westjet in recent years. I remember a year or two ago when their OTP was around 65%. Terrible! People want to fly on an airline that is on-time, and a 90%+ percentile further differentiates Westjet from its competitors.

Spyderz, you're correct. Several airports, like YLW and YQQ... and other bases like YHZ and YXU... only serve a half-dozen or less flights in a day. It's fairly easy to post 100% OTP if you're only doing one flight every two hours or so.

The numbers look good regardless.... even though I'm unsure as to whether it's fair to compare an operation like WestJet (44 aircraft, 3,500 employees, 300 flights a day) to an operation like Southwest (400 aircraft, 35,000 employees, 2,800 flights a day).... and Southwest flies into notoriously busy US airports with high congestion amounts. Even YYZ doesn't compare to some larger US airports in terms of traffic.

Alas, I'm a little concerned that too much emphasis is placed on these statistics.... as some are often determined from results of controllable OTP; in other words, delays which are a result of circumstances which the airline can directly control. I'm not sure if this is the case of these numbers.... but often, causes such as congestion, ATC and ramp delays, and weather aren't factored in controllable OTP.

And.... WestJet currently posts a baggage handling statistic of 7.2 or so mishandled (lost) bags per 1000, as opposed to US carriers like Southwest who post a average of 3.2 per 1000. WestJet currently ranks below United, America West and a number of others in terms of baggage handling. Air Canada doesn't post their numbers.... so this might be something that's simply higher in Canada. So there's still things that need to be worked on.

Nonetheless, it's still an impressive achievement that WestJet and their employees can take pride in.... that's great, and will certainly work in WestJet's favor when it comes to public image.

The WestJet OTP numbers represent all delays for all reasons, controllable or not.

Well... then that's great. You can understand if I'm leery - I just recall a few years ago.... if I remember, it was the horrible summer of 2000.... that one US carrier was busted for posting incredible OTP statistics during the summer.... while failing to mention that they often sat in holding patterns, on the taxiways, or faced weather delays. I don't mean to sound like I'm accusing WestJet of misrepresenting the facts.... and I've had good experiences with WS being on time or even early.

As I said, it's an impressive achievement for the company, something their employees can be proud of.

This is a statistic I'm not aware of... Where did you get this information from?

The statistic is a touch old (a few months, maybe two or three), and the source was a reliable one - I'm not given to pulling numbers out of my ass  Big grin ..... alas, because it's dated a couple months, I'm not sure how it reflects WestJet's current standing in terms of mishandled bags. I simply know that their recent history has seen them having a higher rate of mishandled bags/1000 than many of the majors in the US, including Southwest and JetBlue.

WestJet has made a concerted effort in the same time to improve on-time performance (I heard it mentioned that they went from being statistically in 11th place to first in less than a year), and this thread is about the results of that effort. I know that WestJet has put an effort into improving its baggage handling as well in recent months - I think going in-house with ground handling in YYC, their largest hub, was part of that strategy - so it's possible this statistic has improved as well. I can't be sure. I could ask.

Hey Goose & CanadaEH. I know baggage was a challenge, and that number was actually preety close. However the problems were identified, and I know the number has gone down, and we're still making lots of efforts to improve that number. One nice thing about WestJet, we don't become complacent when things are working, we find solutions.
