Delta's 777's Coach Section 3X3X3

Thu Sep 04, 2003 1:34 pm

I remember reading somewhere a year or so ago that Delta was to reconfigure it's B777-200ER's coach section from it's current 2 X 5 X 2 seating into a more comfortable 3 X 3 X 3 arrangement. Does anyone know if this will happen with future deliveries and will they change the current ones? Also when is Delta to receive anymore B777's? I think they are due to retire the last remaining MD-11's soon. I saw at least 3 in Atlanta on September 2nd.

The existing 777s will be changed over.

We get 2 more 777s in 2005. Cash isn't exactly plentiful so Delta isn't really ordering many mainline jets these days.

N867DA was already in the 3*3*3 configuration by August 24th of this year.

Actually N867DA was delivered in 3-3-3. It was simply fitted with the TIMCO crew rests.

Is N867DA the aircraft they plan to replace the daily MD-11 ATL -NRT route with?

I have yet to fly in the 3x3x3 config on a 777, but have to wonder one point:

We went from one person with that is buried with two people between that person and the aisle to two like that (the window seats). Is that an improvement - especially for flight crews - that 3 person reach is rough - now twice as frequent.

Why is 3-3-3 better than 2-5-2? You still have a high chance of that dreaded middle seat. 777s simply can't compete with the 2-4-2 seating of the A330 and A340 where everyone is guaranteed to be no more than one seat away from the aisle. I avoid the 777 at all costs.

For me the seating arrangement doesnt matter so much, its the seats that do.

I must say I prefer a window seat, so the 2xXx2 arrangement is better than 3xXx3 for me. One less person to have to clamber over to get out.

I flew a 777 from MCO-ATL during the end of August and though that the 3x3x3 seating was a much better look than when it was 2x5x2. It also seemed more comfortable, though I dont think any pitch or seat width changed.

Ok.. so the 777 can't compete with Airbus because they can't guarantee that everyone will be no more than one seat from an aisle??

How can you have a row of 3 seats and have someone more than 1 seat from the aisle?

I'm confused.

Meister, why are you confused? It's very simple - in a row of three seats the person by the window is TWO seats away from the aisle. Get it now?

I never liked 3 abreast because I frequently travel with a companion (wife), and having a 2x seat (window and aisle) has historically been ideal.

But the individual experience is important.

This would likely have been a lot more work than just moving the seats, as the lights, IFE, airfan, and other subtle items need consideration.

But wait, I cannot remember, does DL put air on the 777 cabin for individual control?

I think Delta does individual air control on the 777. I've flown both configurations on the airline (N867DA, N866DA) longhaul and have to say that I like the 2-5-2 better. If you can book a ticket long in advance, then it way beats 3-3-3 because you can have a window and still be just one seat from the aisle. The 3-3-3 is nice for middle passengers, but I don't like being in a window. I was in an aisle on the DL 777 with 3-3-3, but I flew BA to LGW from ATL on a 777 and was at the window. No doubt, I still enjoyed it and it was worth the window seat, but it was a hard escape from the window. If the flight had been hours longer like on a transpacific flight, I might have opted for an aisle because of the escape. I feel bad asking people to move if I need to get up because I try really hard to stay hydrated on flights so I drink a lot of water, but this has obvious consequences.

Does anyone know why airlines no longer seem to install 3x4x2 configurations any more - I don't think any 777 operators have this. This has always seemed to me the best layout for everyone with 9 abreast seating, as 3x3x3 is terrible for couples, and in economy I would think there is a fair proportion on travellers in pairs. And of course in 2x5x2 there is the dreaded middle middle seat.

Varig (and I think Swissair and KLM did) have it on their MD-11s, and it looked good when I flew on one earlier this year. But Varig have chosen 3x3x3 on their 777s - any ideas why the change?

IIRC some of the early 747's initally came with 3x4x2 seating - now that must have felt nice and roomy!

Does 3x4x2 cause weight and balance issues?

Isn't it a bit tricky to reconfigure a seating arrangemnt like this? Besides just shifting the seats around, the overhead lights, oxygen masks, etc. have to be relocated too. Also, do the overhead bins need to be modified? Seems like a pain for planes that are not that old.

Delta-SFO. Those 2 new Triple 7's that Delta is getting, are they -200's or -300's?

They're -200ERs

With they exception of Air France, only Asian airlines have ever ordered/leased any form of 777-300

They should add a little more pitch so those poor middle seat people can actually get out in the first place!! My last flight on DL B777 was a little disappointing due to the small pitch or at least what seemed to be a small pitch in the coach seating. It was bad enough that I would have measured it if I had the means to at the time.
