CO Cairns To Guam

Fri Sep 05, 2003 7:56 pm

I was in Cairns on Thursday and noticed on the departure board a flight departing at 10 minutes past midnight to Guam, with the carrier designation CO.

Does anybody know the euipment, and why it leaves at that time?
Thanks,

Ruscoe

I guess it leaves at that wierd time, because it gets to CNS late the previous evening.

CO flies 737-800's throughout most of the CO Mike network with a couple of exceptions when 767-400's are used (HNL-GUM,HNL-NRT). The early morning arrival in Guam allows onward connections to cities in Japan and Honolulu.

A little tid-bit, up untill '95 CO flew Guam-Brisbane-Sydney with a DC-10.

As well as Honolulu, Auckland, Cairns (3xs weekly)
And Honolulu, Auckland, Brisbane (3xs weekly) DC10s.

Up until the recent past, the service was a boeing 727-200.

This is one of the best value transpacific flight around, and for those
that live in the tropics of Australia, this is the fastest way to America.
It works out both faster and cheaper than flying down to Syd on QF and then backtracking....I have tried to book it several times but due to either the limmited schedule or, the fact that i was on Governement (hence almost always QF) travel, it was ruled out! Too bad cause i hear its good!

I'm a little surprised that CO doesn't serve more cities in Australia from GUM; it would seem to me that GUM would be an ideal connecting point from SYD, MEL, BNE to the smaller cities CO serves in Japan; then again, the overall traffic numbers may not be high enough to justify one or more daily flights, which you'd need to make for an attractive alternative.

If the rumored IAH-GUM non-stop were to be added, that would also significantly strengthen connecting traffic through the GUM hub and possibly make new routes viable for CO.

I fly this route whenever I go to the great barrier reef. Its really a quick option to get there, rather than flying GUM-HNL-SYD-CNS, or flying through HKG or NRT. Its really a nice convenient flight.

CO also operated this segment with the 752 at one time.
