Any Flying Superstitions/rituals?

Sat Sep 06, 2003 1:54 pm

I thought of this a few weeks ago, when my friend laughed at me saying my little superstition/ritual was weird and stupid. Since i have been walking aboard airplanes, i have always done the following: Right hand grab the edge of doorway and pat the fuselage several times upon entering. I dont know how this started, just became a little ritual. The only time a forgot to do this was on the CRJ stairs from ORD-MKE. I realized this during taxi, and it actually made the flight a little tense.......:o good thing it was only a 9 minute flight. Anyone have other rituals like this, be great to hear 'em!

this is what i did a few yrs ago and before...

i use to watch movies that dealt w/ airplane situations (IE: Passenger 57, Final Destination, Turbulence, etc) this sounds really crazy but this made me phycologically think that it won't happen to me. It stopped in '99 when i didn't travel at all for almost 1 1/2 yrs.

Fly safe!

this is eerie. I do exactly the same thing. Other rituals include listening to a particular Hindi song on my walkman during t/o and landing (been doing this for almost 17 years - the cassette has been changed 5 times). I have a set of favourite Hindi songs which I always carry for on-board listening only.

How neat, I do the exact same thing!

Usually, a short/silent prayer of safety or a whispered "in the name of Jesus" type thing to accompany it.

...never thought others did any of that.

I do that sometimes too, but not in a superstitious way. It's more of a "Hello Mr. Airplane how are you doing today?" type thing. I pat the engine cowl of cessnas after doing the walkaround, as well. Sort of a "you've passed, now let's go fly" deal.

I have one! I drink LOTS AND LOTS of CHAMPAS!
and i get my friends too also...and then we
usually go to the galley and chat up which ever FA
we think can get us more.
Now ofcourse this depends on the airline! When its
QF, long haul..not an issue because its good stuff
complimentary. But, on AA long haul, it was really
hard work.

My favourite, I must say, has been United!
They have been exceptionally generious after
visiting the Galley! So, Lets Raise out Glasses to United!

My favorite ritual? Follow the checklist in its entirety. Then, cleared for takeoff, I check (one more time), transponder on ALT, controls free, vacuum in the green and trim set for takeoff.

Then I fly!

I pat the top of the entry door as I board the A/C

When I had less that healthy attitudes I could be found downing quarter pounders and chain smoking.

Personally, I think that anyone who has access to a modern airport served by modern aircraft, and is still afraid of things like "gate 13" or "flight 666", or what have you, is an idiot. Plain and simple. Why the airlines actually cater to these superstitions, which have no more merit than a message obtained from a standard Chinese fortune cookie, is beyond me.

lately, I've been wearing the same pair of J.Crew boxers that have an airplane theme on them, and when I fly jetBlue I always wear my jetBlue T shirt underneath.

Most tourist orientated busineses cater to those people who are superstitious. You wount see a 13th floor on many hotels, gate 13 etc. It is pretty silly, i have flown in row 13 many times though!, its drawn to me. It seems that the asian clientel is one of the more superstitious groups of people. The MGM grand hotel tore down their old strip entrance in favor of the lighted lion statue, due to the oriental superstition of the lion being bad luck. Many asians were apprehensive to enter the doors through the lions mouth.

Also, its pretty cool all of you that pat the plane too, im not alone!!

LOL! I ALWAYS touch the outside of the plane by the door before I enter the plane. If I forget, I feel really nervous. I also say a prayer as the engines spool up for take off.

I've been in flights where passengers refuse to sit in Aisle 13, so some airlines have taken aisle 13 off some of their ac.

So am I sitting in aisle 22 or is it actually 21?  Smile

Right hand and pat the fuselage several times upon entering. and i tell the plane Get us fine  Smile (in spanish of course i'm columbian)

that's what i do but i don't do it in a superticious way in fact i like to fly,m i'm not so nervous when flying but in fact the fligth in itself is for me a ritual, and i enjoy quite a lot that ritual. So why not pat the plane?

Just put me on any modern airliner and i will be happy, give me more star alliance miles and i will be a lot more happy.

lol thats really funny.. I always knock on the fuselage as i'm stepping in through the door. I guess its more because its there (I like to tap on anything I can get my hands on). I seem to remember us having a discussion about this a long time ago and coming to the same conclusion!

Well

I do a weird thing....

Before I enter the plane I slide my first finger down the body of the plane before I get on, and whisper the name of the airline I am flying, and I MUST sit on the right sid eof the plane. I have this weird feeling of being nervous and scared if I fly on the left side. So I ALWAYS book on the right side of the plane.

Sometimea I forget, or am to tired or something but usually when I remember thats what I do.

Just like a bunch of you, I always touch the fuselage. I do it when I'm getting on and when I'm getting off. There isn't really any reason for me, I just like to do it.

what is it with patting the fuselage to the right of the door? why do we all seem to just do it for no real reason? freaky in a way eh

Oh by the way another ritual for flying for me that isnt my fault and I wish i could stop but for some reason every single time i board a plane I never fail to sit on the god damned seatbelt there, sometimes i even say to myself over and over as i walk down the bridge "i will not sit on the belt i will not sit on the belt", and sure enouf I walk down to my seat, throw my bag in the bin and go sit on the god damned belt...

LOL!

I always give the fuselage three good pats on the way in as well. When doing so I like to be well ahead of anyone who might be behind me so I can glance to my right and enjoy the down-the-fuselage view of the aircraft.  Smile

Well I'm usually one to go against the status quo, but I too tap the airplane before I enter the plane. Also when I fly the Cessnas and Duchesses, I tap the engine spinner...perhaps a sort of validation to myself that I completed a thorough preflight  Smile

When we receive Take-Off Clearance I always push hard on the control column. I know that this is not superstition because our throttles are locked if the control column is locked, but I have heard hair raising stories of attempted take-offs with locked control columns.

My movements of the control column simply assures me 100% that it will move and that the airplane will become airborne when I move it.... If it moves we will be OK.... I will take care of the rest.

I don't go in for patting planes like you guys, but I ritually l say a little pray in my head whilst we are pushing back, and its always the same. My family who travel with me never know I am doing it, but if they try speaking to me, they have to wiat till I have finished my little prayer before I answer. Not a church goer, but like to thank the big man and acknowledge what I am about to do isn't really natural.

i hae rituals at FLL and ATL airports
at FLL I'll eat at Sparro and go to gate D6... it was the gate my dad came into every friday and went out of every sunday for a few months. also where i went out of a few times... it's my favorite gate. Also, I go around the entire concoruse.

NOW, At ATL, I obviously cannot do that. My ritual is that i do not ride the rain to concourse A wich really means i don' ride he train since i usually don't go out of B-E.

on 9/11 i am going to start a few traditions. #1 i will go with the group and slap he plane once, right over the door. Also, I will always sit in a window seat (unless i absolutly can't)

I'll let you know if i start any other rituals.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

I think it's quite funny, how many people do it... I do too, also pat the fuselage with my right hand as I enter. Even do this when I'm not flying. When I'm departing a flight, and I'm waiting for the F/A to close the door, I also put my hand on the "WestJet Cares" logo, that is by the boarding door. Kinda of a little send off... how strange... :P Don't even know WHY really. Just the thing I do!

"Right hand grab the edge of doorway and pat the fuselage several times upon entering"

Okay that is CRAZY, I seriously thought I was the only person who would even bother to be strange enough to touch the outside of the plane just before getting on the plane! I used to do it just to be silly and say "ooh i've touched teh outside of a 747" or something, but then it turned into a ritual and I never board an airplane without doing it!  Laugh out loud  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Smile/happy/getting dizzy  Laugh out loud

I don't fly regularily, but I've worked with aircraft as a ramp agent for a while, quite a few times a day.

A habit I had a while was to place a coin - never really matters which kind - on the stop mark on the aircraft lead-in line, leading up to the gate. I'd try to park the nose wheel so it covers the coin.... it always seemed to give me good luck.

And, one could also use it as a means of wagering.... for example, if the person marshalling the aircraft in parked it covering the coin, you don't have to stack bags in the hot, stuffy baggage compartment. It usually instilled some motivation... at least during the summer  Big grin

I'll never forget it. It must have been like 1979 or something, me just a little kid back then. Upon boarding an Air Canada DC-9, I stuck a little DelMonte banana sticker on the skin of the airplane just to the right of the door (and stuck it in place with the obligatory pat on the fuselage). I was curious if that sticker would still be there after the plane landed. Well, it wasn't. TO THIS DAY, when I think about that, I still wonder whether some person (passenger or flight attendant, or gate attendant) peeled that little sticker off before takeoff, or whether it survived takeoff and got blown off at some point during the flight.  Smile

I'm surprised that nobody checks the aircraft data plate on Douglas aircraft......Lookin' for that 1966 build date.

If a plane is really old or has had several owners, I like to look behind the cabinets in the Lavatory for some original 1960's airline wallpaper. Some of it was really cool (a Court Line L-1011 comes to mind).

(edited to add ritual)

I always take something from my previous trip with me, usually the boarding pass. Or the hotel key holder, or something like that. And I used to fly HUNDREDS of segments a year. Crazy huh?

I'd "pat" the aircraft prior to going into the cabin too!
One other ritual is to always reach for life jacket under the seat, find it and make sure its there!

I always try to board first, and always look to see the aircraft rego/name (for the logbook). Also look at the constructors plate inside the door to check acft age (not that I care, but it can be interesting - I flew on a US Airways DC9-30 recently that was older than I am).

Superstition? No... but I always have the Wayfarer's Prayer in my wallet.

As I board the plane, I always smile and greet the FA. When I leave the plane, I always thank the pilot or the FA (whoever is there), even after rough landings. This part is not a superstition, just a way to show these hard-working people that their work is appreciated.

I take a leak before I get on the plane, that is my ritual.

One time I was in a hurry to catch my flight and it almost cost me. I was flying MCO-ATL on a DL 764 and I just drank a couple Margaritas at Chilis Too at MCO. Sitting on the tarmac seemed extra extra long, and we waited forever for this BA 744 to take off in front of us... as soon as the seatbelt sign came off I made a run for the back of the aircraft.
