I heard somewhere that they are looking at starting it some time in the spring of 2004.

JFK-HKG on CX was discontinued immediately after the September 11th, 2001 terror attacks and it stayed grounded as a result of the SARS problem during the winter/spring of 2003. My guess is that if SARS does not come back this fall/winter, the route will resume, on a nonstop basis, with a 747-400 or an A340 before too long. Continental restarted the EWR-HKG route four times a week and despite SARS and the general climate in the industry, CO insists it is a profitable route.

How can a route that was never initiated be discontinued?  Laugh out loud

...seems you're actually got it confused with UA's JFK-HKG flights, which were operated by a 744.

I think it'll be introduced if CX get the rights to LHR-JFK. As it is now, it's a JFK-YYZ-YVR-HKG flight right? Or is JFK completely omitted?

I remember reading that YYZ had a very loyal passengerbase for CX flights to HKG.

CX flies HKG-YVR-JFK... no YYZ in there

No, it's JFK-YVR-HKG. No YYZ leg on this route. YYZ does have a separate flight which stops at ANC to refuel. The JFK-YVR-HKG route is one of CX's most profitable.

And yes, the YYZ flight does well too as Toronto has a huge population of Hong Kong Chinese.

It was either because the US skipped the Visa Waiver, or because of SARS, CX moved the ANC stop to YVR. I remember reading that it was quite a bit of a hassle during the stop at ANC, since passengers had to deplane & then re-board.

No; the JFK-HKG flight always stopped at YVR, never Anchorage. The visa waiver issue had nothing to do with it.

I would imagine it's pretty high up the priority list for CX, though (the nonstop, that is!)

I think there's a bit of confusion here:
The JFK-HKG flight stops at YVR.
The YYZ-HKG flight used to stop at ANC, but, from what I could understand, due to new rules, that stop was moved to YVR, so the passengers wouldn't have to reboard (or something like that).

You are correct. Afterall ANC transit wasn't too bad, an nteresting airport.

I believe talks are to be held towards the end of this month regarding traffic rights for CX to fly LHR-JFK. If they are granted rights, then HKG will look favourably on granting VS rights in return to fly onward from HKG-SYD to connect with the Virgin Blue network.
