Flights Over Multiple Continents

Sun Sep 07, 2003 12:21 pm

Here's a quiz .....

See if you can come up with a route plan that starts in one continent an ends in another, and flies over TWO intervening continents (just touching any landmass of a continent is OK). The flight has to be nonstop, and flown with a 747-400ER, so ETOPS is not an issue. Plot your course on Great Circle Mapper http://gc.kls2.com and post it for us to see. The range of the 747-400ER is 7670 nm.

Flying over water between the continents is even more challenging.

I've got one that is 7287 nm and all the continents are separated by water, but I won't show it just yet. There are lots of other possibilities.

Good luck!

Oh, to make it a bit more challenging, do not deviate more than 250 nm from the shortest (great circle) route.

I've got 2:

Anchorage (ANC) - Cairo (CAI), 6142 miles: Begins in North America, passes over Europe from top to bottom, skims Asia through Turkey, and ends in Africa. http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=anc-cai&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=&PATH-UNITS=mi&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=&MAP-STYLE=

New York (JFK) - Jeddah (JED), 6365 miles: Begins in North America, passes over Europe through France, skims Africa through Egypt, and ends in Asia. http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=jfk-jed&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=

So, how are those?  Smile

Excellent! Water separates the continents (although not always a great deal of water  Smile ) and you do pass over 2 continents.

Here's mine....

PUQ - UPG (Punta Arenas, Chile to Ujung Pandang, Indonesia)
The flight path goes over Antarctica and Australia, 7287 nm total.

I have an interesting one, 7285 miles long, NAT-OMS, goes through South America, Africa, Europe and finishes in Asia, even though the crossing between Europe and Asia is not over water.

Pete,

I found one that is shorter than 4400nm, and can be flown with ETOPS 120 as well:

Natal, Brazil to Izmir, Turkey, passing over the NE tip of South America, Atlantic Ocean, Africa, Mediterranean Sea, the Peloponnesus peninsula of Greece (Europe), over sea again, and into the Asian part of Turkey.

This one should qualify for the big prize, I have a route crossing FOUR continents (although two of them come up twice):

Iqualit (Canada)-Denmark-Hungary-Bulgaria-(Europe)-Asian part of Turkey (Asia)-Egypt/Suez Peninsula (Africa)-West COast of Saudia Arabia (Asia)-Djibouti (Africa), 6147nm

http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=yfb-jib%0D%0A&RANGE=7670@yyc%0D%0A&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=ortho&MAP-CENTER=MAD

What do I win?
