A Melbourne-bound Qantas Boeing 737 carrying 108 passengers made an emergency landing at Christchurch International Airport today more than an hour after take-off.
Emergency services were on standby at the airport after mechanical difficulties forced Qantas Flight 36 to turn back to Christchurch late this afternoon, after departing on schedule at 3.50pm (1.50pm AEST).
The plane landed safely back in Christchurch at 5.20pm (3.20pm AEST).
Most passengers are being accommodated in Christchurch hotels tonight and will be put on flights to Melbourne tomorrow.
A Qantas spokeswoman said the plane would stay in Christchurch overnight and be fitted with a new engine.
Tonight's Melbourne-Christchurch flight has been cancelled, with all passengers transferred to a Sydney-Christchurch flight.
