My apologies if this has been posted (search problems etc), but I have read somewhere that MyTravel are to scrap their DC-10's by the end of the summer season.
The official line seems to be that they are "planned capacity cuts"
for the winter, but one of the DC-10's was recently involved in a high profile, 30 hour (ish) delay on a flight from Fuerteventura. This unfortunately got into the papers, and as local hotels were unable to accommodate 300+ people overnight, some people had to sleep on the floor at the airport.
What do you think? Are these really planned cuts, especially as the company seems to be in real financial trouble at the moment, and retiring these huge, and inefficient aircraft would seem to make sense.
But, thinking way back to the negative PR
over Excalibur and their DC-10's, have they decided to do this for good PR
. Pictures of people sleeping in airports can really damage the image of a company! Also, they surely cant still be making lease payments for these elderly aircraft, so apart from fuel, they can't need to pay out too much to operate them.
