PA About Princess Di In Midflight Caused Chaos

Mon Sep 08, 2003 11:42 am

Anyone hear about the BA flight back from the US where the captain came on the PA and announced that Princess Diana had died? It happened in Paris about 5am so most eastbound flights were halfway across. On this BA flight, the captain made a PA thinking it would be of mild interest, or more likely didn't really think about it at all.

According to a flight attendent on another site, the announcement was met by shrieks of horror and grief, and people started rushing to the toilets to be sick. Not every single one, but LOADS apparently. Enough to put one vomiting, grief-stricken middle England housewife in each toilet. A couple of people who couldn't make it, either due to distance or already occupied, threw up in the cabin on other passengers who also started to be sick. All the while still people sobbing, a few screams etc. And an unbelievable smell, presumably.

How about that for a poorly judged PA? It makes "Welcome to Palestine" / "The good news is that we made a perfect takeoff" look like "Welcome to Baltimore, the local time is 4.58pm and the temperature is 18 degrees. Thanks for flying with us."

I understand that Diana was a very important figure in England and what happened to her was unfortunate.

Even over here in the states it was huge news, but what made me sick was the fact that Mother Theresa died around the same time and she was overshadowed by Diana and no one paid attention. I am sorry, but I think Mother Theresa did a lot more for people and should have been more newsworthy than Diana.

What happened on that flight is rediculous- people running to puke. I could understand crying, but why puking? I didn't hear of such cases happening on American flights on 9-11

I was on a flight when they announced the Yankees won the world series over the P.A. Everyone ran to the toilet to puke then too.

I thought that after the 9/11 attacks, once the airspace was shut down and all flights were diverted, the passengers were not told the reason for the diversion until after they were on the ground, to reduce panic???

No PA announcements were made on 9/11 until after landing, to reduce hysteria firstly & secondly & probably more importantly nobody in the air knew much about what was going on & whether any more aircraft were involved etc......all aircraft in the air were still deemed to be at risk.passengers & crew alike would have reacted very differently if they would have known all the facts at the time.
Princess Diana was a different situation entirely......I was in the air too at this time, working back from NBO & pax were told as part of the wake up PA before landing after the night flight. Funnily enough the most visible outpouring of grief came from the large American (Abercrombie & Kent I think...) tour group who had just come back from safari......the Brits were pretty neutral. Whilst this was a sad occasion it wasn't in any way a panic inducing situation.

Diana's death was a matter of state in Britain, since she had previously held the title of Princess of Wales and was mother to the future king.

When Finland won the ice hockey world championship, Finnair gave champagne to everyone in the air. Not enough to make people throw up, however.

Surely the pax on 9/11 must have been told something?

I'd be interested to hear what stories cabin crews came up with to keep pax content during the diversion - especially for those flights that turned round mid-Atlantic to Europe.

anyone know where there's more info?

Clearly the world press disagreed with you.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Mother T. was an elderly woman, and her death, while a great loss, was not a shock nor tragic. The world press was carrying news of the death, not the life. No doubt, Mother T. had a more important life.

Well, maybe if Mother Theresa had a few tawdry relationships in her immediate family the world press would have noted what a great humanitarian she was.

Yes, that is true. Those who happened to be watching Headline News and MSNBC or any other new channel did see exactly what was going on. It is jetBlue's policy to never censor anything airing on thier LiveTV programming.

We arrived back in Perth from Singapore the day Princess Diana died. There was a British sporting team (cricket, I think - can't remember) on the flight, and they were talking about it at the baggage carousel. Apparently a FA had told one of the team the news just before landing, but no PA announcements were made.
Australian domestic airlines often give major sporting results.
Cheers

An acquaintance of mine was on a plane flying from Washington to Las Vegas on the 9/11 morning, and they were diverted to some midwest airport. According to him, they were told in flight that the entire US airspace had been closed, but were not given a reason for it.
