COEx Ends Newark-Des Moines Service

Tue Sep 09, 2003 1:20 am

Continental Express will discontinue service between Newark and Des Moines on 31 October 2003. They operated two daily ERJs on the route, which is being dropped due to extremely low loads averaging as little as 10-11 people per flight. The Houston flights will continue. It was the only non-stop service between Des Moines and Newark.

Not really a surprise...The people of Des Moines are always complaining that there aren't any nonstops to the coasts. Well, once they get service, it is never utilized. First it was AccessAir, now Coex. Too bad, I would be very surprised if DSM gets NYC service ever again, especially since they can't even partially fill an RJ.

This case is one more for to justify the existence of hubs. Des Moines can't support one airline serving NYC. But through MSP, CVG, and others, Des Moines gets easy 1 stop access to a huge number of markets.

That is pretty sorry indeed. CO has specialized in serving smaller markets with RJ's to its hub. Hey, I bet that's where the aircraft are coming from to make TUL-EWR a reality the following day on November 1.

Well you knew it wasn't doing well when COEX Execs were making trips every other month it seemed to meet with local businness' to try and sell them the market, it was just waiting to happen after the last trip by MR. Coble.
