Runway Configuration At EWR

Tue Sep 09, 2003 5:58 am

i was driving down I-95 past EWR yesterday and saw several aircraft on approach for 22L swing around and land on 29. as my luck would have it, a CO 764 came right over my head on very short final for 29. i later saw that 4L/22R is closed until the end of the month. could make for some excitement for passengers and spotters....

You're going to see quite a few planes landing on 11/29 for the next few weeks. RWY 22R/4L was closed last week for repaving. It's scheduled to reopen on September 28th, maybe earlier if they get it done faster. In the mean time they'll be lots of flights using 11/29 to make up for the closed runway especially during "rush hour" times.

One problem though, the weather was "perfect" today, clear skies great visibility yet the radio news "traffic and weather together" would make announcments "90 minute arrival delays at EWR"!.

They did mention the runway reconstruction project, hopefully they will be able to finish earlier then they planned.

In this case, the delays are not weather-related but tied to the reduction of the airport's capacity to handle aircraft because of the runway closure.

The FAA's advisory...

ATCSCC ADVZY 012 EWR/ZNY 09/08/2003 CDM PROPOSED GROUND DELAY PROGRAM MESSAGE:
AIRPORT: EWR
ADL TIME: 13:20Z
ARRIVALS ESTIMATED FOR: 081730Z - 090259Z
ANTICIPATED PROGRAM AAR: 34
FLIGHTS INCLUDED: ALL CONTIGUOUS US DEPARTURES
CANADIAN AIRPORTS INCLUDED: CYHZ CYOW CYUL CYYZ
DELAY ASSIGNMENT TABLE APPLIES TO: ZNY
ANTICIPATED AVERAGE DELAY: 78
ANTICIPATED MAXIMUM DELAY: 140
REASON: RUNWAY, RY4L/22R CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION
REMARKS: USERS RESPOND BY 1400Z.
USER UPDATES MUST BE RECEIVED BY: 1400Z

The *average* delay is 78 minues (1:18) and the maximum could be 140 minutes (2:10).

Expect to see this delay program routinuely until the runway reopens. If the weather gets bad, i.e. lower ceilings and/or visibilities that preclude circle-to-land approaches, expect the delay figures to increase...

Potomac,

I had to drop off some friends to EWR the other day and noticed the exact same thing. The swing around approach is very cool. For once, the stopped traffic on 95 South was good for spotting.
