Who Loves Alaska/Horizon Air?

Tue Sep 09, 2003 10:23 am

Those two airlines are my favorite airlines of all times. The thread "Who Hates Southwest" had a lot of replies so I did the EXACT opposite. Who loves AS and/or QX? Those two airlines are my favorite of any airline I have flown on. There service is excellent and the crew is also amazing! I get free benefits on them since my dad is a pilot for horizon. Anyway, post away!

I  Love BOI

The old QX F28s were terrible.

Not that I'd know what it was like to be in the cabin; their F28s, like CRAL's, had fiberglass pits. I still have an old ramp jacket I could put on if I wanted to scratch for hours, like the good 'ole days.  Big grin

... just in case I feel nostalgic.

Alas, my experience working QX flights is quite limited..... only did them for a very short while.

Couldn't agree more! Alaska and Horizon shred. I was born and raised on the good old Alaska 727s. And the service and crew are indeed excellent!

I flew on AS and QX quite a bit while I was on assignment in Seattle. I had the opportunity to fly on AS 737-900's, 737-700's, MD-80's and 737-400's. With their online webfares, I went to OAK, LAX, AS / KLAS), USA - Nevada">LAS and SMF on AS/QX. The QX aircraft I flew on were the DH8, DH4, F28 (-4000) and CR7.

In getting to the various destinations, I planned some interesting routes...just to get on some of the airplanes. For instance, I flew to SMF via PDX and returned via BOI. On that trip, I flew on a DH8 on the shuttle trip to PDX and connected to a CRJ-700 to SMF. On the return, I flew a DH4 to BOI and a F-28-4000 back to SEA.

I've always enjoyed Alaska's service. I had flown AS several times when I was younger, living at OAK. I flew the 727-200's quite a bit between OAK and SEA. I also flew on a "new" MD-80 from OAK to ONT. I even managed to fly on a 737-200 from OAK to PDX, with the blower kits.

Their service has always been excellent! Alaska still serves hot meals on most of their longer flights. I was quite impressed with a full, hot breakfast on a morning flight to OAK. What airline serves meals on a 1-1/2 hour flight???

I hope Alaska/Horizon will be around for many more years to come!

Oh, I hardly love UA. It's my username simply because my first flight on a 744 was with UA.

Last time I flew on Horizon's F28 from Boise to SEA I was starting to think the Captain was going to drive the whole way. I haven't used that much runway since I flew on a SAS DC-8 way back when.

I don't like the fact that, when I last flew Alaska a couple of years ago, they included a religious prayer with my meal. They may have ended that practice. I don't have anything against people worshiping the religion of their choice, but I thought it was an invasion of my personal belief system (atheist) for them to give me that when I paid for the seat. Ever since then, I've avoided Alasaka Airlines and fly Aeromexico or Mexicana when I go to Cabo.

I've been on Alaska I think 4 times, and I've always loved their courteous service and the fact that they serve hot meals on (most) LAX-SEA flights. I don't know if they still do now, but my family always liked to fly them for their superior service and comfort.

I personally like Alaska Airlines so much, I am 5 airplanes short of photographing their entire fleet. 1 MD-80, 2 737-700's, 1 737-400 and 1 737-200. I love the service, the flights, the paint job, the routes.
As for the religeous stuff. I don't think they do that anymore.

Never flown on AS, but if UA were to fold, I'd probably choose them, since they're the hometown airline here in SEA.

I have flown Horizon, and have been impressed each time, and will fly them again. There were rumors of a PAE-PDX flight, and that would be a dream come true for me, since I visit the Portland area often and live 2 miles from PAE. I think they were getting serious before 9/11, but nothing since. I've done SEA-PDX with QX, no complaints at all. I've also flown SEA-FCA (or is it FCO?) and again, great flights.

To correct my earlier post....it was SEA-FCA. FCO is Rome, and I just don't see Horizon flying from Seattle to Rome anytime soon! LOL!

I flew Alaska from CUN to LAX and back about three weeks ago, and let me tell you; their service is GREAT. CUN-LAX was in coach and we had a full hot meal with two rounds of drinks (no alcohol) in an almost new 737-700 (with a rather weird seats upholstery though). LAX-CUN was great also, but this time in FC; too bad they don't have an IFE system. 5 hours in that plane it's a little too much for just an in-flight magazine. Great service. From my experience I would recommend it !

And by the way, they still give the little prayer on every meal. I don't think it hurts or affects anyone IMHO; it's pretty much like changing channels on cable and catch an "Amen" between ESPN and HBO.

Bicoastal: Smart choice flying AM; we're glad to serve you !  Big thumbs up

"too bad they don't have an IFE system."

Apparently, that is soon to change. They were testing a new "system" last spring and there will be a formal announcement concerning their IFE plans tomorrow.

Regarding Alaska and Horizon, they are my two favorite carriers.
Horizon has one of the most modern and comfortable aircraft fleets among regional carriers. I also appreciate how their in-flight service features regional products (esp. the complimentary microbrews and wines). They offer a relatively premium product, which suits their relatively high ticket prices!

Alaska: I have been flying them since I was 3 months old, so I have to be somewhat partial. I still have faint, but fond memories of the days of "Gold Coast Service."

3-4 years ago, Alaska was an inconsistent operation at best. Fortunately, things have changed, and these days, they have one of the best products of any domestic carrier: decent in-flight service, frequent schedules, affordable "First Class" (well, it's better than coach), and, during the past 12 months, good operational performance! During the last quarter, Alaska was one of the top performing carriers in the DOT report, ranking above average in all four categories.

I had the chance to fly QX from SEA - PDX - SEA back in July. Great airline!!! Everyone associated with QX from the ticket counter to the flight crew were awesome. Great service all the way through. They have an "Aloha Spirit" (not to do with AQ), that the majors lack big time. I have not had the opportutnity to fly on AS, but if its anything like QX, and what others have posted ... I look forward to that flight. Maybe to PDX next year.

One of the reasons I respect ("love" if you prefer) Alaska is their "in your face" route additions of SEA-IAD, SEA-DEN, SEA-EWR, SEA-BOS and PDX-DEN, by which they exposed the market manipulation machinations of UA, CO and AA.

While the incumbents on these routes claimed they were forced to reduce capacity due to "traffic declines," here's what happened when Alaska, who apparently wasn't in on their schemes, decided to test the waters in the same markets:

SEA-IAD and SEA-DEN where UA arbitrarily cut capacity: Both routes a success for AS from day one; within first year of service added second daily roundtrip to IAD year around, added a fourth daily roundtrip to DEN during the Summer season.

SEA-EWR: another success from the first day of operation; months later added a second daily roundtrip.

SEA-BOS: load factor in first month of service over 80% where it has since remained -- shortly after service began second daily roundtrip added.

PDX-DEN: increased capacity by replacing 3 daily QX CR7 roundtrips with 2 737-400s daily thereby increasing from 210 available seats daily each way to 276.

The frequncies (or capacity) added in these markets has in no way diminished either load factors or yields. Again, one more huge reason why I respect ("love") Alaska Airlines: they refused to play along with the big boys and exposed their big lies about declining traffic which they tried to use as an excuse for their market manipulation schemes. Inasmuch as Alaska otherwise seems to be enamored with copying the marketing/pricing follies of the money-losing would-be cartel airlines, their "in your face" response to arbitrary capacity reductions by UA, CO and AA came as a pleasant surprise.

So they actually give you a piece of paper with a prayer on it along with your meal? That is pretty interesting. I have never heard of that before. I'm surprised nobody has tried to sue them over it yet.

I have never seen Alaska do prayer, nor I don't think I will. I am pretty sure they stopped. Anyone know why BOI-DEN stopped? I saw a post when it first started saying the loads were much, much higher than expected.

I  Love BOI

The prayer cards are still on every full meal tray. While AS receives some complaints about them, the calls and letters from people who SUPPORT the practice far outweigh the complaints.

AS is a nice airline, but I wish on the coast-to-coast flights it was on a bigger plane, as opposed to a 737-700. I doubt that AS is buying any 757's or 767's anytime soon, but it would be nice!
I've heard, however, AS will at least look at Airbus when it comes time for their next purchase of planes.

I flew AS once - from Anchorage to Seattle. There was nothing wrong with it: nice plane, friendly flight-attendents.
Ok, service was little poor - we got a sandwich for 3 hrs flight at lunchtime.
But scenic was great, weather fine. It worked.
But I don't "love" or "hate" airlines, I love to fly with this or that airline and I like or dislike an airline.

I'm really not feeling Alaska Airlines at this time... As a PDX fan and frequent user, I've noticed Alaska interest in additional service here dwindling over the years... so My love for this airlines has dwindled also.....So until that changes, I will probably not love AS for a while.....MI Dispiace......
