YYZ Gtaa Tnew Trials Saturday Sept 13

Tue Sep 09, 2003 11:40 pm

Just wondering who from here will be going to the TNew trials at YYZ on Saturday September 13th? I got the email congratulating me for being selected, but I know a few people that got rejected for whatever reason.

So who from here is confirmed?

Funny thing is, I may have to work that day. hehehehehe. But I'll do my best to be there for sure.

I guess nobody is going? Did those of you who applied get rejected?

I'm just wondering what is involved in the trials. Do you have to go to one of their restrooms, sit on the toilet seat for five minutes, and tell them if it's comfortable?

Ya never know! I think the next trials set for November or so will be more interesting, because we will get to board an aircraft. In the end, it will likely be quite boring. lol.

A real live aircraft? Through a real live gate?

How exciting. What next?  Big grin

"A real live aircraft? Through a real live gate?"

I know, pretty incredible, don't you think???  Smile But it is a former Royal Aviation 737, one that had an emergency landing after a bad engine failure and fire taking off from Cuba.

You're right, it really will be monotonous. I just hope the food is good.

So if you're boarding the a/c, and you're going through the gate, and you mention the 'b' word inadvertently, I wonder if you will still be arrested. fterall, you are there to help them sort out any issues. Security shouldn't be left out.

And while you're at it, might as well fire off one or two extinguishers to make sure they're in good working order.

Well, thank God we won't have to take off in that rust bucket! Has it been cleaned since C3 went under?

I remember they did something similar prior to T3 opening. They used an ex-WD A310 for gate "testing" at T3.

Too bad they couldn't get something more glam than the 732. I hope they air it out prior to using it.

From what I know, the 737 doesn't have seats in it, so nothing "glam" about it. It would be great to get a nice wide body for the testing though!

So I guess no other a.net member got the GTAA confirmation for the testing.

I don't wanna go totally off topic here, but I heard that T-New will feature an automated system for aircraft docking. In other words, no more person with flags. Just wondering what other airports have this system, and if I'm right about this at YYz.

Automatic bridge docking system? Anyone else having incredibly funny scenarios of bad things happening with version 1.0 of these things?

hahahahaha, I can't wait to find out about these automated bridge docking systems. And can't wait to find out about problems!

I'll see about work, but I hate taking a day off work when money is tight. I'll get in contact with you Jordan.

Just bringing this thread back to life as the time gets closer to the trials this weekend.

Jordan, I know you'll be there, Tony will too, as he's now confirmed. Of course Slawko will be around too. Just wondering if Wunderk and EmiratesA345 are going to go incognito, or if they want to say hello? Always good to meet new fellow aviation fans.

By the way, Neil, will you be there? You know you really want to go! Or will your cardboard cutout be there in your presence?

I don't wanna go totally off topic here, but I heard that T-New will feature an automated system for aircraft docking. In other words, no more person with flags. Just wondering what other airports have this system, and if I'm right about this at YYz.

Many airports have that system, they're nothing new and has been around for a decade or more.

The systems I'm familiar with and have most commonly seen usually involve a series of green-yellow-red lights for speed and stopping plus a "line up" set of lights which are arranged in a certain way so that they look green to the flight deck if they're lined up with the lead-in line, but will go red if they veer off the line. The green-yellow-red lights are connected to sensors embedded in the ramp surface, and all the ground crew needs to do is set the panel to the correct aircraft type, and the system will do the rest - theoretically.

Sometimes, the green-yellow-red lights are substituted with a specific nose "bar" which will physically touch the centre of the aircraft windscreen when the aircraft is in position. Lower-tech, but 100% reliable.

The automated systems don't always work the greatest in wintertime - speaking from experience - and sometimes the lights have to be switched manually when the sensors embedded in the ramp concrete get dirty or broken. Replacing the sensors is costly and takes gates off-line for a week or more.

Quite a few pilots I know just don't trust them and would rather use a marshaller - there's been some engine-meets-jetway incidents because the automated systems aren't calibrated correctly.

Automated docking I guess is an old system, but I'm wondering if they are introducing any new technology at YYZ.

Check out the registration on this C150, I think I should buy it  Smile

Gee that seems like quite the familiar registration Nuno!

I got to fly this 150 today, and will most likely get to fly it tomorrow as well.

Have fun at the trials guys, I hope this new terminal is going to make flying from YYZ a little bit more pleasant. Although I don't mind T1 or T2, a new terminal would be a nicer experience for all than either of the old terminals when it's busy. A city as exciting as Toronto deserves an exciting new terminal. Gee I can't wait for the Montrealers on the forum to start lamenting on how horrible Toronto is etc etc etc... About how it's such a boring American city, haha if only they gave it a chance instead of automatically being so against anything Toronto.

Cheers guys, watch out for that C-GOMZ, it might just be controlled by me!

Thanks Jeremy, I should have credited you for showing me this aircraft. Keep it right side up though!

I will miss T1 the most (T2 does nothing for me at all), but for the general public, the new terminal will be much more pleasant to use I'm sure. hopefully the parking garage for TNew will be high enough for decent spotting.  Big grin

C-GRYK; I don't think this thread has anything to do with Montrealers... Do you? So, please.... Don't provoke things. By the way, I hope you enjoy your day of flying instructions (at where? Seneca?) while a few of us get to have free lunch, compliments of the GTAA.
As mentioned previously, I'm also starting to get the feeling this trial will be somewhat..... How you say.... Ah yes - BORING! However, it's an opportunity to participate in an event which should help the airport authority iron out some of the bugs prior to letting the general public loose in the new terminal. Besides, what else am I gonna do at 9AM on a Saturday morning..... Except sleep-in (ha!)

Heh. GOMZ. That brings back memories, I almost crashed the damn thing.

You should try GUVH, if it's still there. That's the biggest piece of flying crap I've ever flown in my entire life.

And that automatic docking system is in widespread use as we speak. It's installed at almost all the major airports here in Australia.

I think they require more people for the second one, so your chances are greater. Lots of people got rejected, and I wonder how they chose who got in or not.

Grant, no, I will not wear my Royal uniform! LOL. And yes, I still fit in it, unlike some people, I'm the same size I was 2 years ago.  Big grin

EmiratesA345, I'll wave back at you on the 2nd for sure, enjoy the Concorde flight! Make sure you don't leave the aircraft empty handed though.  Smile
