Japan Airlines 747 On NRT-MNL-NRT

Wed Sep 10, 2003 3:18 pm

I might fly from MNL to NRT on JL742 operated with a "747" as loaded in Galileo, Worldspan etc.

Now I have some questions:
If JL would operate a 747-400 for sure they would publish it. Do they operate a 747-200 on this route?

Does JL operate the 747-100 (incl. SR, SUD) only on domestic flights?

Are this flights operated by JAL them self or maybe JAA as well?

Could it be a 743 as well?

Thanks for help ...

I've travelled this route many times on JL, and if it's published as a 747, it is usually a 747-300. However, sometimes they would replace it with JAA aircraft for operational reasons, but it is extremely rare. JAL aircraft deployment changes all the time, even if it has been published on the timetable already. I'm booked for this route in December this year, and since I made my booking months ago, there have been numerous changes to the aircraft deployed already.

I think I fly there end of September. A 743 would already be great and if it would be JAA, this would even be better.

May I ask you which class you normally travel? Can you tell me something about JALs Season Class on this route?

You can actually check which exact aircraft will be doing a particular flight. On the English homepage of the JAL Cargo website, under the "Flight Status Information" box on the left side of the frontpage, you can type in the details of a flight that is scheduled to depart within the next 36 hours or so, and the registration of the aircraft will be provided.

http://www.jal.co.jp/en/jalcargo/

Very useful for us spotters too, to check in advance if anything special is coming to town.

I have some information on this. It could be a DC10, 742, 743 0r 744 depending on the flight(JL746 or 742) and the day. Unfortunately I am almost certain that it will not be the JAA B743 as the only JAA painted 743 (JA8189) is solely used on Taiwan flights.

If you need I can let you know the exact type if you tell me your flight no and date of travel around 25th, as I will only be able to get to a JAL computer then as I am on off days. (Too late?)

But if a computer say it is a 742, it may very well be so.

You will have PTVs on 742/743 Seasons class but not on economy , 744s will have full magic system on all classes. I don't know what entertainment system DC10 has on this route though.

Good luck.

N949WP/Don
Thank you very much for the informations provided.

It looks like I'm flying MNL-NRT on JL742 on the 29SEP03 but I'm leaving Europe around the 24th. I already flew Seasons on 744, D10, 772 and M11 and I would love to fly the 743 or 742 on JAL/JAA and I wouldn't mind the D10 as well. Anyway, the main goal is to get to Japan  Big grin

Btw: the tool provided on JAL Cargo site is great. I also like the JAL flight informations with all delay/cancellation reasons given. It looks like yesterday there was a 742 on the run, today a 743 and tomorrow a 742 again. Great ...

Just another thing, anyone has seating maps of JAL? Haven't seen it on their website and none in the printed timetable as well.

JAL's seatmap for JL742/29SEP as 5 Rows downstairs and 4 upstairs, implying its a 747 classic.

Swissgabe,

You can find the seatmaps here: http://www.frequentflyer.oag.com/airlines_airports/seating.asp

You can also find it on their North American website:

Just a fair warning that JL literally has so many different configurations, even with the same aircraft type, that it's almost impossible to tell which one will be deployed on your route. I have flown on their 743 about 4 times, but have yet to come across with the seating configuration as described on the website! There used to be an independent website (in Japanese) designed by someone from Japan that practically has every seat map of every plane in the JAL fleet, and tells you exactly which registrations have what kind of configuration, but I've lost the link!

Swissgabe - the seatmap provided is the one direct from JALCOM, so if its not that aircraft, they are going to have to do a swift reaccomodation prior to departure. This one's pretty reliable I think.

I know this is completely off the subject, but after noticing that the classic 747s still operate between NRT and MNL, I couldn't help but think of the last time I flew that route on a Pan Am 742 back in the summer of 1984.

Thanks for that memory . . .
