Does Airtran Use These 2 End Gates At ATL?

These 2 end gates saddling the DC-9. That looks like a really tight fit, especially the 1 on the left.

Yep. We use those two gates, and yep..it's a tight fit. Definitely need attentive wing walkers on both sides, as well as two marshallers in front, since you initially start straight in toward where that DC-9 is sitting, then make the turn toward the gate. One marshaller takes you straight in, then hands you off to the other one which brings you in to the gate.

Before AirTran added four additional gates during late 1999, the area between 1A and 4 (loving nicknamed "The Hole") was large enough to park 3 a/c. That changed when they shifted the gate spaces in order to accommodate the additional gates. Much of that space and the old widebody gates (where Eastern parked L1011s back in the day) were lost with the new gates. Wingwalking an a/c out of the Hole could be tricky. Usually, 1A would be empty, and we'd take the plane out through that area. If 1A was occupied, or the a/c needed to go to an even side gate, we'd pull the plane out through 4 (they'd have to retract the jetway completely, and then have it over as far to the left of the gate as they could physically get it). The Hole was where Eastern Metro Express flights operated out of back when Eastern was around.
