Other US Carrier's International Expansion

Thu Sep 11, 2003 3:27 pm

Since the CO International Expansion was such a large topic, what about other U.S. carriers and possible expansions.

Well, American Airlines is going international from Ft. Lauderdale. Daily 737-800s to Santo Domingo and Port-Au-Prince start 1 November; daily 737-800 to Caracas starts 15 December. They are also adding Cozumel (from Dallas). Look for them to add Valencia, Venzuela in 2004 (from Miami), as close as March 2004. Liberia, Costa Rica is another strong possibility. They are also adding Dallas-Buenos Aires, a thrice weekly 767-300ER. You might see them going to Dublin and Shannon this winter if rumours come true that they will operate to the Emerald Isle from Miami in codeshare with Aer Lingus.

AeroMexico has already launched Orlando-Monterrey, twice weekly. MTY has been doing nicely lately when it comes to transborder services. Aviacasa may be launching Miami-Monterrey shortly.

There has been talk MIA-MAN will happen this summer, but I doubt it. Mainly because bmi is very likely going to launch it this April.

DFW-MAN on AA has usually been a seasonal service ... I'd look for it again next spring or summer.

DFW-MAN on AA has not operated for something like eight to ten years.

Look for NW to try again with the proposed Detroit-Madrid service, either on a seasonal or year round basis.

UA, as it recovers from bankrupcty and traffic to the Far East fully recovers, is planning on restarting several transpacific routes.

And, Frontier is quietly building up quite a bit of service from its Denver hub to Mexico.

I would expect Delta to try a CVG-AMS if KLM does join Skyteam and if the equipment is available. I would also expect them to restart CVG-FCO, as the loads and yields were good and now that the transatlantic market is in better shape.
