DL 767 Not A DL 767

Fri Sep 12, 2003 8:55 pm

I was just at a company meeting in FLL. One of the other attendee's told me he flew in on DL from ATL. He said he was on a 767 but it was a South African 767. The crew was DL and the crew thanked South African for the use of the plane, etc.

Does anybody know anything about this? Just curious...

Probably a codeshare flight and the flights are announced that way and to a 'novice' at the airport, it may be misinterpreted that the aircraft was for South African. They don't even have a 767 in their fleet that makes normal scheduled service to North America, as that makes for a long ferry flight. The two or three left are being phased out as well.

The codeshare status of the flight would be announced in-flight and in the boarding area.

I wish I could have seen it but he seemed to think that it actually had SAA markings on the plane. I seriously doubted his claim but thought I would ask around anyway...

Thanks,
John

All of this is being blow out of proportion - South African's codeshare with Delta includes FLL. It is a Delta 767 with a Delta crew, the codeshare flight numbers are always read aloud on the intercom when announcing the flight number as B4Real notes correctly. The captain saying thanks for lending us the aircraft was probably a cute tounge in cheek joke.

SAA's 747-400 comes in early in the morning here. I saw it from my house this morning making a downwind turn for RWY 9R. This aircraft's flies JNB-CPT-SID-ATL.

Well, I really thought that was the case but wanted to ask some of the other A.net geeks to be certain.
