Swiss Aircraft

Sat Sep 13, 2003 4:46 am

Just sniffing around Swiss' new website (the one with lots of blank space at the bottom of every page  Big grin) and noticed something about their fleet...

The A340s say 'Swiss' on the side.

The A319s say 'Suisse'

The Avro RJs say 'Svizra'

The MD-11s say 'Svizzera'

What languages are used here? And do any other carriers do this? Strange!

There are 4 national languages in Switzerland: German, French, Italian and Romanch.
Suisse is in french, Svizra in romanch and Svizzera in italian. In German Swiss is Schweiz. Kilavoud.

'Suisse' is french
Svizra' is rumantsch (A language that's only spoken in a small part of Switzerland by only a few people)
'Svizzera' is italian

AFAIK, when the new "Swiss"-brand was first presented, there was talk that some a/c would have titles in these languages... To represent all parts of Switzerland... Something that has not come true so far... (And never will, I guess)

Maybe SWISS was talking about other swiss airlines, who knows!!! Interesting about the rumantsch is the fact that we the portuguese can clearly communicate with them, I had a friend from the canton of Grisons and we had an excelent time matching words!
Now back to SWISS I think it would be nice actually to put some aircraft with the name in the 4 languages, I bet all people would guess it's SWISS, the worst they would look to the tail and find out the flag there!!!
Regards and I really miss a nice swiss fondue!!!
