ATA Announces Mrtc!

Sat Sep 13, 2003 4:54 am

One would imagine that AA might reconsider switching its 757s to denser configuration now:

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2003--ATA (ATA Airlines, Inc.)(Nasdaq:ATAH - News) passengers will soon get more legroom. ATA will remove 16 seats from each of its 15 Boeing 757-200 aircraft, reducing the number of seats from 216 to 200 seats. This change will increase the seat pitch (the distance between seats in an aircraft's passenger cabin) from 30" to 32" and 33", giving customers more legroom and a more comfortable flying experience.

The transformation will be complete by the first week in October, and will make the seat pitch more consistent with that of the Boeing 737-800 and 757-300 aircraft ATA flies.

"Our fleet of Boeing 757-200 aircraft is used primarily for longer-haul flights," said John Happ, ATA Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales. "We're increasing our seat pitch to provide our customers with a more pleasant travel experience."

During the past year, ATA has introduced other customer amenities, including ATA's popular Web Check-In, which allows E-ticketed passengers to print their boarding pass and receipt from their personal computers via ATA.Com. ATA has also continued to add self-service e-ticket kiosks, full-service curbside check-in and gate automation at the airports it serves, allowing customers to save time at the airport and simply board their flight.

"As one of the premier low-cost carriers in the industry, we strive to stay ahead of the trend by delivering low fares without sacrificing top-notch service," said Happ. "We're currently conducting extensive research on customer preferences to extend this commitment further, by discovering what will be most important to our customers for the long term."

ATA's fleet of Boeing 757-200 aircraft are powered by Rolls-Royce engines and feature advanced aerodynamics, long-range capabilities and a quiet ride. The aircraft is divided into three cabin sections and is equipped with four lavatories. It also features in-flight entertainment, large overhead bins and full beverage service. In other news, ATA is test marketing offering meals for sale on the long-haul flights this aircraft serves, as well as movies for long-haul flights within the Continental U.S.

Besides it saves us a flight attendant .... the cost of the 5th f/a is higher than the additional revenue we may pick up with those 16 seats.

sort of interesting i thought now that aa is discontinuing mrtc on most a/c, that the airline of chicago's other airport adds this, a smack in the face to aa

The 752 and AB6 certainly do not constitute "most aircraft" in AA's fleet!

Wow, so quickly?

If they can redo the seat configuration before October, what happens to my 29F,E,D seats we purchased? Do I need to call their customer service?

AA replacing some seats still won't make coach seat pitch as horrendous as ATA had it in their B757-200.

Because their other aircraft were already delivered in semi-humane configurations!

Really? I didn't know that there are planes running around with the new config yet. At least I haven't seen any looking at random seat maps and g displays.

Their website says that the 737's are 31-32" pitch. That's still "cozy".

I think that ATA stole this idea from AA. However when I went from LAX-OGG on their LT1011's the leg room was pretty decent includuding that it was a long haul low cost carrier. I that ATA is cool. I went on an AA 757-200 and I had a placebo effect. I belived that the aircraft had more room but it did not but the 737-800 had MRTC.

Wow ATA F/As must bank...

If saving a 5th F/A is worth 16 seats.

What if we took out all but, 1 seat and saved 3 more F/A jobs that would really make money..

Lemme think an average yield of $55.00 per seat on ATA average stage length (Approx) means the 5th F/A is worth approx $880.00 a flight!!!

That must be a great job. Are they hiring....

Seriously... I think the move is meant to try to show a better load factor then would result as the airline struggles to look good to the street and refinance its debts. Nothing more then smoke and mirrors...

Maybe they shouldn't have grown so aggressively and now they are scrambling to cover....

I heard the main reason why we are taking those seats out are because of weight and balance issues and consistancy accross the fleet....good for us to be able to promote it. I was just fine in the 737 - 800 with the pitch...then again I'm 5'6".

Is this possibly a reaction to the MDW runway overrun that occurred this week?

This was planned well in advance of the MDW overrun.

It also only involves the 757-200 aircraft....not the 300 series that overran.
