Major CO Announcement Expected Monday

Sat Sep 13, 2003 7:45 am

As per the employee's daily memo and weekly "voice mail" from Gordon, Mr. Bethune is expected to make a major announcement (i.e. same magnitude as introduction of BusinessFirst) on Monday during a luncheon with a Washington, DC-area airline industry group.

Timing is right for Boeing to announce a launch customer for the 7E7, and we have deferred all deliveries of that size aircraft indefinitely. Perhaps a conversion of existing orders to 7E7? Gordon and several other key executives have been meeting with Boeing to discuss aircraft orders, but no other specifics have been reached. Things could get interesting, stay tuned...

Is it not too early for confirmed orders for the aircraft? Are the aircraft specifics already known? Still seems to me that the aircraft is in the research mode, and not much is known about it yet.

I can guarantee you that it has nothing to do with aircraft orders. Other than that, I'll keep quiet.  Big grin

Alpha 1,

Interesting, I'll be back at work tomorrow after a short vacation, hopefully I'll get a better idea then. Until that time, I'd like to see some speculation, we are a pretty conservative carrier, it's not every day we announce something big!

There was a meeting today with Continental executives (including Gordon) and Boeing executives......also on the agenda, from wire service reports, was the 11 B757-300s, I posted that a couple of minutes ago.

Could it be possible that CO will announce that it is taking the aircraft and the announcement will be about new routes, increased services, or the creation of an additional focus city? One possibility.

The other thing that comes to mind is the AF/KLM deal and how it affects Continental......Continental joining SkyTeam would be a major step, and could result in increased transatlantic services and/or transpacific services. (more service to paris, rome, milan? new routes to Seoul?)

Just a few guesses?

I think it'll be the Skyteam announcement. In another thread, it has been said that Air France will be making an annoucement on September 15 (Monday) about new Skyteam members. So, we will likely learn on Monday that Continental, KLM, and Northwest are officially joining Skyteam.

I agree with TIMF and N766UA, either the announcement of skyteam, or the dropping of Cleveland. The industry is still too unstable to announce a new a/c type. Just 2 years ago CO was making a big deal that it had to default on a/c lease payments, they since deferred a/c deliveries, and like everyone else, haven't made a profit! Not sure if announcing a new a/c type and order is really a priority for them.

Dropping of Cleveland-- that makes no sense, none at all-- if he said it was a product enhancement-- well how is dropping a hub a product enhancement? Or let's say it's a product enhancement related to a move-- tell me what puny city could they move to that would be a product enhancement and described as such.

N766UA, there's been so many people that have worked up here, and the truth is I either don't know, or just can't remember all of them. That name doesn't ring a bell offhand, but maybe it'll shake loose in my memory.  Smile

Flyboyaz, I hear you about more work-but not a whole lot. I understand where it's coming from.

Well I can tell you the pilot bid that is out for bid this week still has CLE open in its staffing for the following year.

It also includes only about +30 net crews on the B757, or just around 5 more airplanes.

Overall, the new bid reduces the number of pilots on CO mainline by about -100 net.

I think this bid is the best sign for those of you who want to speculate about our future.

The announcement on Monday is not about the "new elite" program as you call it. Firstly is the elite issue is a minor tweak, and is really part of a continuing tweak over the last 6 months or so, but really shouldn't be talked about on here. Besides, the elite stuff was in the MOU this month, so it is hardly worth a huge announcement if it were that.

I would also be surprised if it were to do with Skyteam as Gordon pretty much announced that months ago.

who knows

Well Artsy it starts on Monday the 15th and it's all we've heard about for the past 2 weeks....and we were told it was the biggest thing since we introduced Businessfirst. Maybe there is something else?? Who knows but that was my guess. I've been know to be wrong from time to time...hehe.

Yes, but like the other part of thr tweak, it is not public, and not meant to made public, so there would not be an announcement in regards to this

Next contestant?

Artsy, unlike the first segment of the enhancement, this one is absolutely meant to go public, and for good reason, as you'll see.

Somehow I fail to see how a multitude of "eliteAccess" signs at every hub equates to "not made public"  Smile

My guess is that it will be a system like UA's Economy Plus, with this being pre-assigned for Elite members at reservation time, and an extra charge for people who are not elite who wish to have the extra leg room, or something like VS's Premium economy, in other words the fleet is going 3-class... Just my 2 cents worth....

The Elite Access is a new "Elite Status for a Day" plan. CO is going to guarantee anyone who buys a full Y fare ticket a window or aisle seat. If not available, they will get bonus miles for OnePass. Also they will have Elite status for their trip...comp upgrades, preboarding privileges, etc.

Sounds like a great idea...as long as you pay for a full fare coach ticket. From what I've been told it doesn't apply to gov't fares or obviously pax that are rerouted and placed in a Y class of service. Should make for an interesting experience at the ATO.

It's been big news...my station manager is coming in on Sunday..her day off...to set up for it. She's very excited.

so the last post was no fun to read, anyways what about EWR-ATH, maybe an announcement about that. I've been hearing things about the early launch of this route. Someone also stated a while back of a mid-european market flying the 777. Maybe this is it?

Thanks for the notice Cdfm....we already have our signs out....it's starting Monday, unless they all of a sudden decide to pull it back...which is doubtful. I hardly think it's confidential. We were not told it was confidential. And besides I'm not employed by CO directly anyhow!

After reading a lot of similiar 'big news' posts....some of you consider new wallpaper in men's room 'huge news'.....

UA and US declaring bankruptcy was a major announcement...

CO is likely just issuing a press release...

I'll know later as I am having dinner with (among others) a CO employee...

I trust it's good news.

This wont be the case as they tend to do that without hoopla..., but Gordon made a comment about a major announcement, he wouldn't do that over a typical press release. As far as your finding out later with your meeting with a CO employee, they'll only have the same information as the rest of us, and half the people on this thread are CO employees

Usually their legal counsel knows a bit more for no other reason that everything goes through legal before it's announced. They are notoriously tight lipped.

If it's what I think it is....I would say it's of moderate interest to those that are not regular CO'ers.

Speaking of which.....you guys actually bid on our corporate travel for 2004...after declining in 2003 and 2002. The best part is that we won't have to work with a 'voucher' based system for flying first calss/biz Class...it's a flat volume discount--one domestic, one transatlanic, one for the rest of the world. It's deceptively simple--which has not been the case for our OneWorld plan. We're hoping CO is selected so we can actually get on a nonstop flight!
