Hartsfield To Keep Its Name!

Sat Sep 13, 2003 3:47 pm

While I know this has been discussed, I figured a new post was relevant since a decision has been reached. The airport will remain, Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. The Atlanta City Council will decide on another way to remember Maynard Jackson. Most likely, the new international terminal will be named after him. Personally, I feel the right decision has been made.

I am glad that Atlanta didn't sell out to political correctness.

Actually, its not over yet. The panel appointed by Mayor Franklin will make a written report this Friday. There is still a very strong contingent pushing for a complete rename or at least a partial rename (Hartsfield Jackson Int'l). It looks like we are leaning toward only naming the new International Terminal after Maynard Jackson but nothing would surprise me at this point.

It looks as though they are keeping William B. Hartsfield.

HartsFIELD is Heart's Field.

Now if it was Just Atlanta International Airport, I would support Maynard Jackson's name on the airport, but the airport is already named. That would be just like the russians going to the moon, stealing our flag, and saying "We declare the moon in the name of Russia."

I'm glad it will remain Hartsfield.

And if Maynard Jackson's wife sees this, she ought to be lucky they are doing ANYTHING after the trouble she has caused. "Anything other than naming the airport after him would be an INSULT?.

It wouldn't be so bad to maybe name it Hartsfield Jackson, but completely renaming the airport would be an insult to Hartsfield's family and Jackson's wife sounds like a Biiiotch who will probably cry racism if it isn't renamed.

Oh well, she's still got the income from all those airport concessions awarded to friends and family.  Wink/being sarcastic

I am just glad that they didn't rename DTW, Coleman Young Airport. It is bad enough that they named a terminal McNamara after one of the most corrupt politicians in the U.S., probably not much worse than Chicago's Daley (either of them). Although McNamara was a big proponent of expanding DTW and building the new terminal, the terminal was named while he was STILL in office. As for Coleman Young, he has to be Detroit's worst ever mayor. Yes he was Detroit's first ever black mayor, but Detroit really went downhill while he was in office. Crime rose, he was corrupt. Although the city is slowly improving, half of the city looks worse than a 3rd world country still from his days in office. The only good thing Young did for aviation was his attempt at expanding Detroit City Airport, but that failed.

I don't really know much about Maynard Jackson, but I feel that the airport should keep it's current namesake. Hartsfield was responsible for making Atlanta's airport the worlds busiest. Naming a terminal is a good way to go.

More than likely, the City Council will just ignore the Committee's recommendations. Several City Council members have already said that they will present bills to the Council in the next week or so to rename the airport. So basically it looks like the City of Atlanta wasted money on a committee whose recommendations will be ignored. The City cannot afford to go wasting money like they are doing. If it wasn't for the level of debt the City has on Hartsfield, the State of Georgia would have taken it over years ago.

Well Detroit area was in really great shape when Coleman Young was Mayor of Detroit and McNamara was the Wayne County Executive. Those two are probably the most corrupt tandem ever, but then again I don't know how well they got along since Coleman Young hated white people and McNamara is white. One thing I do give them credit for over Daley- both wanted to expand their respective airports while Daley likes to tear them up.
