YYZ To HKG, Is AA Good?

Sun Sep 14, 2003 6:51 am

Hi,

I study at niagar falls, and i'm planning to fly back to HK for christmas. I got a few quotes from agencies, and they said that AA was the cheapest (1250cdn) to fly back to hk in christmas. UA's rate was 1700 and AC and CX were both 2000+ I haven't got the qoute for CO yet, though it's still in my optionj list.

I want to ask if AA and CO are good for flying transpacific, in matters of comfort, entertainment, and food.

For such a long flight, i hope the flight will be enjoyable!

THanks, SAmuel

If the fare difference is so great then yeah go for AA.

But it doesnt fly to HKG. American Airlines flies up to AA), Japan">NRT with B 777s from JFK and DFW and then codeshares with CX to HKG from AA), Japan">NRT. Their B 777s are really good in Eco class with Ptvs in every seat.

I think that AA codeshares with CX too to HKG from LAX and SFO. Im not 100% sure on this one but someone does have concrete info then it'll be useful for you to know.

In anycase you can get your freq flyer mileage on CX and AA via their programs due to ONE WORLD.

Well, heres how it will probably go:

Your flights to the West Coast or Japan will be on American Airlines, then your flight to HKG will be an AA codeshare flight on Cathay Pacific. Depending on your options, you will probably be able to get transpacific flights on CX. Despite MRTC, I probably still would not want to be on AA in coach for a transpacific (which for you would probably be DFW-AA), Japan">NRT...14 hrs.) segment. The seating is nice, but the service will be barely average.

CO is okay, again, youre looking at a code-share flight to HKG, as CO no longer flies there. I'd suspect that the flight to HKG would be on Northwest, and your flight to AA), Japan">NRT will either be on CO or NW. Both would be a painful experience in coach, 747-400 on NW and a CO 777....both have terribly uncomfortable seats, and although CO has some of the best service for a US airline, I wouldnt recommend them for a trans-pacific flight.

I'd go with AA and try to get Cathay Pacific flights on the trans-pacific segments.

The AA offer may be even better than you think......since AA and CX code-share on many routes and services due to the OneWorld alliance, you may be getting the C$2000 CX itinerary for C$1250 since your tickets will carry the AA flight codes.....it can be that AA still has cheaper seats in its inventories on the specific flights which are no longer available with CX. Try to get the flight numbers for the AA flights and carefully check your routing and the flights, especially on the transpacific segments.

CO currently offers 5x weekly EWR-HKG 777 nonstops, as well as twice-weekly 738 flights GUM-HKG. If you price out CO (shouldn't be too difficult...), you almost cetainly will be routed through EWR, with no codesharing necessary.

The CO 777 is decent in coach, good meals, friendly service, PTVs, and fairly comfortable seat. However, legroom isn't good. I would avoid international connections at all costs, so if you can get a domestic connection (seeing as you would preclear US Customs at YYZ), I would go for it.

I'd probably go for AA then book on the CX flights like Dutchjet mentioned. Or maybe I wouldn't mind flying AA transpac afterall, since they have 34"/35" pitch with MRTC which would be a great plus on long hauls. But if you really want good service then yeah, CX has that and maybe just a little less legroom.

On the other hand, depending on the price, CO would be a good option with the nonstop flight and thus shorter traveling time as you would then be very tired on the long hauls.

Why not fly the A340 of Cathay from YYZ direct to HKG? A short stop in YVR but you don't need to change, and you can experience the Cathay service the whole way!

Ughhh! What was I thinking? I totally forgot about the EWR-HKG nonstop! I didnt include the CO Mike GUM-HKG flight because I doubt the fare would route him through IAH, HNL, and GUM.
