SAA To The West Coast

Tue Sep 16, 2003 5:16 am

could SAA ever start a service that would go to the west coast? routings could be JNB-FRA-SFO, or JNB-FRA-LAX, or some other intermediate stop. also, did SAA ever serve IAH? I was driving into the intl terminal area there, and South African Airways was on the sign listing airlines. Ive been wondering this ever since

I don't think that South African flights to San Francisco or to Los Angeles would make sense. I guess that the passengers are flying via Frankfurt on Lufthansa (both airlines are partner) or via Atlanta or New York on Delta (also a South African partner airline) to the US Westcoast.

well, if the intermediate stop was, say, GRU, they could use that too. i forgot about the LH/SA codeshare. i guess FRA wouldnt be a great one to codeshare through. if the EU/US open skies agreement were opened though, then it could possibly be started. i think that maybe routing it through South America could make sense though

SAA did fly to IAH in the 80's- one of their five weekly JNB-SID-JFK flights was re-routed JNB-SID-IAH on a 747SP. Service didn't last long before the local Texan Govt. had the service terminated due to apartheid. There used to be a large South African community in Houston- don't know if they're still there or if they moved to Miami!

FYI the JFK flights were terminated later and were operated by a mix of 747 and 747SP although SAA was famous for last minute 747 type substitutions.

ATL is the best stopover point for any JNB-LAX flights.

JFK is the best stopover point for any JNB-SFO flights.

Both airports are within a few miles of the Great Circle route between JNB and the respective west coast cities.... its actually eerie, JNB-ATL-LAX adds 1 nm and JNB-JFK-SFO adds 2 nm.

JNB-SFO is 9170nm - right at the stated range of the 777-200LR, but my guess is heavy restrictions would cripple any possible benefit of operating it nonstop.

There are very large (and very rich) South African communities in Los Angeles and San Diego. I'm sure SAA would find some passengers if they flew to LAX, but it's easier and a lot more cost-effective to fly them on DL to ATL and JFK first.

Even with the large population down in LA/SD area, lets me realistic. That what codeshare is all about. Thats what codeshare with DL is all about. There is now reason to fly a 747 or A340 on to SFO or LAX withg 30 people when you can put them on a DL flight. I don't think there is a population in SoCal high enough to justify trucking the plane to the west coast.

maybe SAA could add another leg on their ATL and JFK flights. one could go JNB-SID-JFK-SFO, and the other could go JNB-SID-ATL-LAX. That could work, couldnt it?
