How Many Aircraft In The U.S. Are In Storage?

Tue Sep 16, 2003 11:59 am

Just curious if anyone knows just how many aircraft for each airline is in storage and retired (i.e. B-727) in the United States that could theoretically be brought back into service quickly if they had to? If for example the opposite of effects of 9/11 occurred over night and airlines couldn't wait on new aircraft deliveries.

Boy, wouldn't we all love to see the all airworthy 727, L-1011, and others return to service quickly. Big grin

That would never happen though. Anyway, I'm not sure I can answer your question but there are 200 aircraft on the ground at Victorville alone...but that counts all airframes, intact or otherwise, so I don't know what percentage are intact.

I wonder if the hawaiian DC-9s are still airworthy or if they've been stripped down.

There's a site called Cactuswings http://www.cactuswings.com that lists all kinds of storage-related info, so maybe they have a count over there somehwere. If not, their site administrator might know...

In Arizona there are nearly 600 between TUS GYR and MZJ. I suspect California is also near the same level, if not a bit higher.

Check out last weeks issue of US News & World Report, I think there is a number there.

No Ual777, I meant only civil airliners. AMARC has nearly 5000 aircraft on hand and none are airliners that could ever fly again.

TUS has, by my drive by guess, about 50, MZJ nearly 300, and GYR about 200 last I was there.

The HAL DC-9's are starting to turn into beer cars. I was out there 3 weeks ago and watched on meet it's fate to the scrappers machines. Quite a sound hearing the stringers and skin rip as the scrapper torn into it. The airframe thrashing about.

Only wish it was one of the 3 holers I used to work on for my employer.
