Did LOT Ever Have A Fatal Accident?

Tue Sep 16, 2003 12:52 pm

Does anyone know if LOT Polish Airlines ever had an accident. I have heard stories of an ols Il crashing many years a go, but i could not find any info about the incident.

Just wanted to know if anyone knows anything about LOT's flying record.

I don't know details, but I don't think it's had any fatal accidents. I know since it switched to a largely "Western" (non-Soviet) fleet there hasn't been anything major incidents. But even when LOT was flying Soviet airplanes I don't think they ever had an accident...?

Impressive list! Did you notice that they had more incidents/accidents with western built aircraft than with russian built ones?

Hi!

I remember at least once they lost a IL62 on landing and I think also a Vickers Viscount, that was many years ago, besides that I think recently they've been ok.

Unique, yeah interesting point. I think the list is maybe 50/50 (didnt count though) but I was surprised to see all those DC-3s listed but then again, maybe I shouldn't be. After all, it's well known that Soviet mismanagement of the satellite countries like Poland was widespread--it wouldn't surprise me if Poles, who were on the Soviet's "sh*t list", were not given adequate funds to support their aviation program (i.e. maintaining their planes or training pilots). But anyway, there are no incidents reported since The 'Wall fell and LOT switched to a mostly Boeing fleet and I hope it stays that way...

What about the IL-62 crash in 1986?
It crashed into the woods just short of Warsaw, everybody died in the crash.

But nothing happened since the as ILoveORD said: The Wall.

Hey,

The two most memorable ones :

1981- IL-62 - While approaching from Chicago and JFK the plane crashed in the woods, near Okecie Airport, killing Anna Jantar , a famous Polish singer of the time, and 22 members of the US boxing team. The name of the plane was Cpernicus, after the famous Polish astronomer.

1982 or 1983 - another IL 62, this time bound for JFK. An engine disintegrated after take-off from Okecie, after attempting landing in places like Gdansk-Robiechowo and Modlin, the plane turned back for Warsaw, which was a mistake. This time, the citizens of Warsaw saw the crash happen, as the plane went down in one of the city's parks. One woman, whom my father knows, was denied boarding that flight, because of something undeclared in her bags .... the next day she came back with a lot of roses to give to the customs people. Paderewski was the name, and they say that bottles of alcohol are to blame for the crash, because the supposedly exploded, which caused one of the 4 engines to disintegrate and explode, dragging the reast behind. RIP.

all those accidents occurred before LOT went to a boeing fleet. the fleet most likely included better training of pilots (and most likely the elimination of alcohol from the cockpit.) Big grin

Second IL-62 also crashed in the forest (not in the park) Lasy Kabackie.

In 1968 or 1969 AN-24 crashed in the weed field near Zawoja killing all 55 pax and crew on board. That time people were told that it happened because of pilot error. But it was not true. That pilot had almost 4000 hours and the problem was with the aircraft itself. Investigation was closed only after 1 week. We will never know what really happened.

And the very first "big" LOTs accident occured in early 60s. Vickers Viscount 804 crashed after being hit by a lightning. I believe 25 people (all) died.

Plus there were numerous hijackings in 1970s - 1985s when domestic aircrafts AN-24s and occassionaly IL-18s were taken to West Berlin. Couple of those hijackings ended in death of the hijackers.
