The two most memorable ones :
-62 - While approaching from Chicago and JFK
the plane crashed in the woods, near Okecie Airport, killing Anna Jantar , a famous Polish singer of the time, and 22 members of the US boxing team. The name of the plane was Cpernicus, after the famous Polish astronomer.
1982 or 1983 - another IL
62, this time bound for JFK
. An engine disintegrated after take-off from Okecie, after attempting landing in places like Gdansk-Robiechowo and Modlin, the plane turned back for Warsaw, which was a mistake. This time, the citizens of Warsaw saw the crash happen, as the plane went down in one of the city's parks. One woman, whom my father knows, was denied boarding that flight, because of something undeclared in her bags .... the next day she came back with a lot of roses to give to the customs people. Paderewski was the name, and they say that bottles of alcohol are to blame for the crash, because the supposedly exploded, which caused one of the 4 engines to disintegrate and explode, dragging the reast behind. RIP.
