Biggest Airplane At Reagan Nat'l

Wed Sep 17, 2003 10:44 pm

I was wondering, what has been the biggest (scheduled) airliner into Washington Reagan Nat'l? I think the biggest one right now is the 757, operated by DL, US and maybe a few others, am I correct?

UA, DL, and AA operate 75s into National. US Airways sends in a couple A321s everyday as well.

DL, NW, AA, and UA all fly 757s in to DCA. I believe US doesn't. They fly A321s instead.

Eastern wanted to use the A300 on the Shuttle and did fly it into DCA on a trial basis. The powers-that-were, however, did not grant permanent approval.

757s are the largest aircraft that are allowed to be scheduled at DCA. Under certain circumstances larger planes are allowed to land there. For instance, about 3 years ago, a UA DC10 enroute from ORD-BWI was diverted to DCA due to weather at BWI and threat of fuel exhaustion.

UA also landed a 762 there years ago.

Also, don't forget that ATA operates 752s at DCA as well. I'm even scheduled on another one in early December.

Has an Eastern A300 ever landed there? I thought I saw a grainy picture of one landing at national. It was a long time ago...

I work for UA in the Operations Control Center, and we did indeed divert a DC-10 to DCA due to weather. I think it was 1998 or 1999. I remember it was a pretty big deal. We bussed the psgrs to BWI. The aircraft ferried out the next day with minimum fuel, no passengers and no freight.

I've flown the 757-200 into DCA from Charlotte on US Airways, so I know they've been scheduled in the past. Also, I've flown Northwest 757s out of DCA in past years. In addition, I've seen America West 757s docked at DCA jetways.

I'm told Northwest will return 757s to DCA later this Fall. The photos below reveal both US Airways and Northwest 757s previously on the ground at DCA. Meanwhile, the AA 757 with both the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial in the background (a difficult angle) is simply a beauty shot.

I remember seeing NW 757s take off from DCA a few years back. I would love to see the DC10 do an approach into there

ATA doesn't fly 757s into DCA since 2001.

Well, that link didn't work very well.

However. . .check out flights on December 4th and 7th between MDW and DCA. There are several 752s flying in and out of DCA for ATA.

At one time, prior to 9-11-01, the FAA allowed 767s into DCA, although nobody ever started scheduled service with them. I presume that 767s were prohibited into DCA after the airport re-opened in October 01.

contrails, i'm not 100% sure about the 767 thing. i could have sworn that i had seen notes in the airport info directory and various other sources going back quite a while ago that aircraft such as 767, A300, L1011, DC10 were prohibited from operation there. maybe not though....

DIA,

I have checked ATA's schedule and it seems that they put 757s only in December and April. Its Christmas and Eastern time.
