F9 Expansion At LAX?

Thu Sep 18, 2003 11:24 am

I heard yesterday that F9 was going to expand LAX service to SFO, YVR, PDX, SEA and some mexican destinations. Any confirmation?

Well, I'd say the chances are slim and none. I haven't heard anything about this at work. Where did you hear this anyway? YVR could be a good route from LAX...but surely it would be started from DEN first.

Well stated MSY. Besides they stated awhile ago it would STL or PIT to get non DEN flights when and if they do start. However, I think that was just leverage to get gates at DEN, I would guess DEN would continue to be their focus of ops for a looong time to come. Besides, as pointed out by MSY, none of those routes make sense except for YVR.

Maybe it's all part of that merger with AS we've been hearing about!  Big grin

(i) There aren't a lot (if any) of free gates at LAX.

(ii) F9 has never said it will be PIT or STL. Those cities have said that.

(iii) There is no merger with Alaska. But there is this:

If the article is correct, Horizon will be replacing MESA as Frontier Jet Express.

The airline never said that....
Frontier Airlines would consider starting a secondary hub in Pittsburgh, St. Louis or another market if Denver International Airport failed to provide enough gates to accommodate its growth, a Frontier official said Wednesday.

"...would consider starting a secondary hub..."

"consider" being the operative word. As I said, they've never said "they will".

Yes, it's officially put out today. Horizon is taking over as Frontier Jet Express in the new year.

I don't think LambertMan ever claimed Frontier definitely WOULD consider PIT or STL as a second hub either; the operative phrase being "when and if" here.

While LAX is indeed a large market, Frontier would face quite a bit of competition on routes up and down the West Coast -- from Alaska, United, American, Southwest, jetBlue, and even America West. I'm not sure they'd be well-advised to pick that fight.

Scottb:

I agree that LAX would be problematic, if only because of the lack of gates.

Howsumever, one problem for Frontier is this: they are building a fairly loyal customer base (LCB), and with the great tv ads going national, they base will probably improve.

The drawback for (some of) Frontier's LCB is that presently limited to flying through DEN. There is no north/south flying.

So while the competition is fierce on both coasts, I could imagine Frontier doing a couple of 2 x daily on some of the better coastal routes. Not as "competitive" business, not as a fight, but giving the LCB a choice.

Or not even purely coastal. An alternative way for Frontier's customers to get from - say - SFO to Chicago might work.

Stress "might."

Then again, with today's announcement of the deal with Horizon, which will effectively double the Jet Express fleet, plus the rumors of red-eyes from DEN to Florida this winter, Frontier appears to be in a good position to do pretty much what it wants.

Thanks for that. I don't have access to the schedule, and the timetable on the website is - or was half an hour ago - still the old one.

well it was brought to my attention that F9 in LAX was trying to move to terminal 3 and pick up 4 gates, instead of terminal 6? with one gate.

If it happens, then obviously I think it's a good idea.

mariner-

The December schedule was just released earlier this week. These flights, scheduled around the holidays, provide great timing.

In addition to the redeyes, some flights which would normally remain overnight in FL will turn for a late evening departure. In most cases, this will be the last departure heading west from the respective FL airport.
