The Union Flag Tail

Fri Sep 19, 2003 3:39 am

Why are there two different types of Union Flag tail? if you look at the two photos i put below then you can see that they are slightly different. Any reason why?

They are identical, they only look different because you are looking at the tail from both sides.

The second pic appears as tho the upper band is closer to the top of the tail, however it could be angles...

They're not identical. I've seen it many times. While spotting at Gatwick on sunday both G-VIIC and G-VIIH had the design more stretched out and nearer the top of the tail. Yet when i flew to San Diego on G-YMME and G-YMMA it was more flat. Look in the database and type in G-YMM in the search box and click to contains and you'll see that all of the first ones (G-YMMA-G-YMM?) all have the "lower" tail design when the rest have the "higher" tail design

most likely minor glitch in the paint shops when the colours were being applied.

No because there are about an even amount of the same. It'll also occurs on B737s of BA some are "lower" and some are "higher" (if you get what i'm saying)

I am not for sure but do you remember some of the world image have the Union flag on them? In this case the first BA 777 photo from Pleasarecool have United Kingdom on it, so this must be one of the original. The otherone must be the newer version (after they ditched the world image) I hope this make sense

Yeah that makes sense i guess. So do you think they'll paint all the "older" ones to the newer design or will they just leave it?

There IS a difference between the 2. Seems the design originally introduced when the World Tails were scrapped in June 1999 has been dropped for a slightly vertically enlarged version. I have seen the difference on many aircraft. One thing I've noted, the A319's and A320's being delivered from Airbus all retain the "older" version even though it seems the "newer" one was introduced over a year and a half ago. I've seen both of these Union Flag variations on many BA aircraft, from 777's to 734's, the some of the recently painted older (G-BUS-) model Airbus' do have the newer stretched out version, but again the new build 319's and 320's all retain the more compact design. I also do believe however, that the 744's version of the Union Flag has never been altered.

Maybe some BA employees can verify that?

The lower band on one version goes clearly onto the fuselage at the middle of the tail base. the other only goes on to the fuselage at the rear bottom of the tail.

But this i don't know why either.

The 'Union Flag' design is modelled on a billowing flag (i.e. one blowing in the wind).

Therefore, each design should be slightly different as the flag is technically in a slightly different position every time the wind blows........

It's an interesting little quirk of the BA design. It's most noticeable on the Concorde fleet:

(If you ignore that the rudders are in a different position, you can see that on BOAE the rudder actuator is painted white, whereas on BOAC and BOAD it is painted red..........)

Thanks but there are really only two union flag designs aren't there. So why didn't they make them all different? Too much designing i guess.

I noticed that as well on the Jumbo Jets. Seems BA doesn´t have exact masks for their painters. Quite odd.

Sidenote: now that the world schemes are disappearing from the fleet BA reintroduces the last two letters of the registration on the aircraft´s tails.

Surely the people who paint the plane would use some sort of stencil to paint (correct me if i'm wrong, i don't actually know anything about aircraft painting  Big grin). Then surely they'd all come out the same for the same aircraft.

P.S A340600 did you see BA2155 today at Gatwick. If so what aircraft was operating it. Just curious, because my uncle and auntie were on that flight - in first class - lucky gits  Big grin
