Odd Gaps In BA's Network . . .

Fri Sep 19, 2003 10:39 am

Here's a question: why does BA not fly to many asian cities that other European network carriers seem to serve profitably? For instance: BA does not fly to Shanghai, Osaka, or Seoul, which if I'm not mistaken, Air France, Lufthansa, and KLM all fly to. AF even has flights to Guangzhou now!

Hi KQ777,

I know that BA used to fly to Osaka and seoul but they pulled the plug and cut back on their more exotic routes. There was a good thread ' BA's forgotten routes' (or something like that) a few weeks ago on airliners...
next flights : BD LHR-TXL J, FR SXF-STN Y, SN BRU-LHR Y, MA LHR-BUD Y, BA BUD-LHR J, BA LCY-SNN-JFK J, BA JFK-LHR J, BA

Don't forget VS flights 346s to Shanghai from LHR.

Zizou and Pearson:
My point exactly: if VS can fly to PVG, then shouldn't BA be flying there too? Otherwise it will loose out to VS for pax who don't want a connection. Same is true of Seoul: Air France has the KE codeshare, but still flies direct to the Korean capital. LH has the Asiana, ANA, and Thai codeshares but still has a much more extensive route network in Asia than BA. It just seems that with all the talk of Asia being the real growth market for air travel, BA should be in the game building up a reputation and trying to grab some future market share. Granted, I'm no airline executive . . .

I think it all comes down to priorities, as we all know LHR is heavily slot constrained, so options have to be made. It seems that BA has chosen to focus on markets that assure heavy loads/premium fares and a few destinations scattered around the globe to keep its int'l status thus avoid serious gaps in its network.

How about Hawaii, I've often wondered why they don't fly there. Why not a continuation flight from LAX.

I think they cannot fly to PVG because Virgin got awarded the route instead.

They used to fly to TPE and MNL from HKG but these stopped after 9/11. I guess they weren't profitable enough.
