Formula One Flights To Indianapolis

Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:32 pm

The United States Grand Prix is less than a week away - the first practice starts next Friday. Supposedly, all the cargo flights with tons of equipment from the 10 F1 teams (cars, tires, components, spares, etc.) arrive between Saturday and Sunday.

I just read an article about the logistics in F1. It said that 4 747s and 2 MD-11s will fly from London (for UK based teams) and Munich (for teams based in the rest of Europe) to IND. The only exception here is Ferrari, the article said they will coordinate the transportation of their equipment by themselves.

So, if anyone here is from Indianapolis, expect some interesting cargo flights this weekend. I bet the MD-11s mentioned are FedEx aircraft, but I'm not sure about the 747s. Maybe Atlas Air, Cargolux?

I'll keep an eye on flytecomm.com and flightarrivals.com and I'll keep you informed.

Can't wait for next weekend, this will be the first F1 race I'll attend. I'll be flying MEX-ORD on the 25th, on a Mexicana 757. I'll drive to Indy the day after that.

Cheers,
AM

Wrong again. Lufthansa is actually a 747, just checked that at http://fboweb.com

Lufthansa will arrive at 3pm aprox., and Cargolux at 4:30pm.

AM:

Good luck!!! I wish I could also be going to IND F1... I have been trying to get to Canadian Grand Prix for the last two years and to Italian GP this year. However, flights between MEX-YUL would make me stay for an extra Monday, which I cannot afford being an employee.
MEX-MXP flights were just great (because of Independence long weekend), but, since it was for fewer than 7 days, it cost a fortune.

So good luck and enjoy it... Hope I can do it some day!!!!

Does anyone think that The Formula One race has anything to do with this flight:

DAL9674
Airline: Delta
Flight Number: 9674
Departure City (Airport): Atlanta, GA
Departure Time: 09/21/2003 3:30 PM
Arrival City (Airport): Indianapolis, IN (IND)
Arrival Time: 09/21/2003 04:00 PM

I called Delta but they said it was a regularly scheduled flight and that it will probably be operated several more times in the future.

if I have a chance to get to IND I'll try to check out the cargo jets. I'm headed to CLE on Business then driving to IND for the F1 Race.

This will be my fourth USGP at Indy. I read in an Formula One magazine last week and they said they fly into ORD and then truck in the equipment to Indianapolis. That's about a four or five hour drive. I thought they (the F-1 teams) flew directly to IND. After all, the airport is more than adequate to accommodate the flights and they have customs on then field. What ever, I hope it is a better race than last year. At least the points championship is still NOT decided (unlike last year).
