Inside The 777: AA Not UA!

Sat Sep 20, 2003 1:29 pm

Did anyone else see this show tonight on Discovery Channel? It was fantastic except for one big thing: It is an in-depth look at the 777 and American Airlines as the dominate carrier flying this big rig. What the heck are they thinking? United was the first commercial carrier to operate the 777 and have many more of these than AA. They also profiled a retiring AA Captain which was REALLY cool....lots of flight deck shots and inside info.

But NO mention of UA!!!! Arrrgggghhh.

I saw this show about 6 months ago or more. My bet is they tried UA but the human relations department wasn't exactly "accommodating." Good show though, I liked it.

This is a pretty old show I believe, there is another one which profiles a little about Continental's operation because of there former EWR-HKG route, which I don't think still exists. Anyways, the AA one, I think they did this because its "american" and they wanted the 777 to look very "American" thats the only assumption I can make about this. THe show is called "777, 21st century something" Quite interesting!

If it is the same one I am thinking of, that was shot quite a while ago. Is that the program where they show the wings snap in testing phase? If so, that is a pretty old program.

The guide data says it was first aired in 1999. I've seen it before, but it's on again in 15 minutes if anyone wants to see it.

Yeah, if it's the one where the flight attendant talks about the 777 causing "less (human) gas" because of cabin altitude, that's a good one. I believe it was first showed sometime before 9/11, and definitely shot before 9/11.

I only got to the ending of it but thankfully they'll be airing it again at 1AM so I got the VCR timer on for that.  Big thumbs up

Yes it is the same program that the FA said that less gas line.

Think about it, which makes a better story. Documenting a regular UA 777 flight or a retirement flight on AA's flagship aircraft. They probably asked all US operators of the 777 and chose AA because of the additional retirement story they could get.

Good point. I just saw the first part again and they did mention UA. I feel better now since the Flight Attendants for AA made themselves look like AAss by dropping a first class shrimp scampi and talking about serving it!!!!

Only AA...

I think this one is part of that series on Discovery Wings they call "Fasten your Seatbelts Please..." If I'm not mistaken, American had a hand in producing all of them. There is this one on the 777, which is enjoyable, especially the water cannon salute to the retiring captain on their return to DFW. The others in the series inlcude one on ground operations, flight attendant training, and the MD-11. You will notice American's prominence in all of them.

Continental still fly from NY to HK every day with the 777. Go CO!
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

One question: I saw another Discovery Wings Channel show on the development of the 777. It went through design, delivery, etc and did use UA throughout. However, they stated that because of the wing size and smaller room at airports, you could fold up 22 feet of the wing on either side to fit into gates. Is that true? I have never seen that before. They made some comment about the folded wing tip as the first 777 came to IAD.

The folding wing mentioned was to be an option for the 777, to make it more airport friendly......however, no airline to date has gone for this option. I think that the folding wing adds weight to the aircraft, plus an additional operational concern (ie, another thing to go wrong!).
