PHL's International Past

Mon Sep 22, 2003 5:06 am

Philadelphia International Airport currently has Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and US Airways as the primary long haul carriers, plus Air Jamaica. But in the past other longhaul carriers made this a much more cosmopolitan hub. I think Swissair used to fly 747s to PHL. Does anyone know any other international carriers that have previously served PHL? Or do you think any more will begin services now that the new international terminal has opened and US Airways will be joining the Star Alliance? Maybe even an Asian carrier like ANA? Any thoughts are appreciated . . .

TWA flew from PHL to LHR on a nonstop basis for many years with 707s, 747s, 1011s and 767s at different times in their jet history. AA picked up this route when they did the Heathrow deal with TWA, and I think flew it with 767s for a short time.....I am not sure.

Swissair certainly did fly to PHL. For many years, the flight operated PHL-BOS-ZRH and DC10s, 743s, 743Combi and I think MD11s over the years operated it.

doubt NH would fly to PHL when JFK/IAD are so close... and within easy 1stop Star transfer on US

Swissair did operate 747-300's to ZRH from PHL up until the mid to late 90's or so...forget when the service was suspended...

Swiss was flying into PHL until 97/98.... They used 747-300's and MD11's. Also KLM use to fly 747-400's into PHL back in the early 90's. NW took over the route and flew it with DC10's for a while and then suspended service around 97.

Mexicana used to fly PHL a long ago (mid 80's if not mistaken). I'm almost positive they used the 727 back then (now retired).

was the Swissair route ZRH-BOS-PHL-ZRH or ZRH-BOS-PHL-BOS-ZRH. I always thought it was the first one. Mexicana did fly here, NWA used to fly DC-10's from AMS up until around '98 when US cancelled the flight.

Swissair operated PHL-BOS-ZRH with a 747-300 through the early 1990's.

Northwest operated PHL-AMS from 1998 to 1999.

US Airways operated PHL-Brussels, Belgium for a short time.

American Airlines briefly operated PHL-LHR with a 767-300 in 1994 or 1995.

TWA flew PHL-LHR. Then US bought the route and transferred it to LGW due to Bermuda II.
